Founder & CEO @ Next Sketch / Industrial Design & Engineering & Human Centered AI Specialist ?? I help my clients craft beautiful and engaging products

Design is most often a ?? show... Lets set some expectations: It's is not just prompting Vizcom with a half baked sketch and producing a cool looking product or crafting cool motion graphics in Figma. Behind every polished product are dozens, sometimes hundreds of sketches, notes, and wireframes. It’s relentless reviewing, testing, and iterating. And even after the visuals are approved, it takes hundreds to thousands of additional hours to engineer and build. ?The reality: Product development and design are not easy! It takes discipline, persistence, hard work, creativity, empathy and vision - far beyond what quick reels portray. What are your thoughts? What are the biggest misconceptions you've faced? #ProductDesign #UXDesign #UIDesign #IndustrialDesign #DesignThinking #DesignProcess #BehindTheScenes #DesignReality #DesignJourney #DesignCommunity #Innovation #CreativeProcess #Designers #DesignLeadership #Startup #Smallbusiness #Innovation

I don’t know if AI will replace you, but if you aren’t using AI, you’ll probably be replaced. Workflows for designers are changing.. probably faster than you and I can keep up. It's tough, because you don't want to adopt every new tool that pops up, but resisting this change means risking obsolescence. I’m taking the middle ground, keeping the methods that work well (and that I enjoy), while leveraging AI tools with a clear intent. Focusing on how each tool will make my workflow more efficient. Here’s what I'm doing: My Current AI Workflow ?????? ? Research & Insights: Using Perplexity and ChatGPT to quickly gather, summarize, and structure deep user insights and market research. This cuts down hours spent digging through articles or survey results. ? Ideation & Visualization: Using tools like Ideogram for quick image inspiration, paired with Vizcom for AI-assisted sketching and rapid rendering. This combo helps me iterate concepts lightning-fast, bridging the gap from idea to tangible prototype in minutes. My AI Experiments ?? ? Claude 3.7: Currently experimenting with Claude’s powerful code-generation and prototyping capabilities. It helps me quickly build functional prototypes, speeding up cycles of testing and validation. ? Google AI Studio: Diving deeper into research, learning, and AI-agent creation. AI agents simplify routine tasks, allowing me to focus more on big-picture thinking and strategic problem-solving. The Bottom Line: AI won’t replace your creativity, but it will replace designers who don’t leverage these tools to enhance their creativity. How are you integrating AI into your workflow? What other tools should I consider? ?? #AIinDesign #UXDesign #DesignTools #Innovation #AIWorkflow #DesignCommunity #ProductDesign #FutureOfDesign #IndustrialDesign #Design #ProductDesign

?? Seems like the Apple Vision Pro Missed the Mark ?? As designers, we know that tech (or ??) alone doesn't guarantee success; it's about connecting with users on a deeper level. This is true for trillion dollar companies and boot strapped startups. Here’s why I think Apple has to regroup: 1. 2D in a 3D World? ??? ? Vision Pro projects 2D screens in 3D space, but is that enough to wow users? AR/VR is all about immersive experiences, not just a new way to look at your screen. If it doesn’t fully leverage spatial computing, why switch from existing devices? 2. Where Are the Killer Apps? ??♂? ? A great device needs great apps. Without standout applications that truly showcase what Vision Pro can do, users won’t have much reason to buy in. We need practical, real-world apps—not just tech demos that look cool but add little value. 3. Phones Are Just Too Easy?? ? Phones are quick, simple, and socially acceptable. Strapping on a headset? Not so much. Vision Pro needs to overcome these habits and prove it's worth the extra effort—otherwise, people will just stick with what’s comfortable. 4. Looks Are Only Half the Story ? ? A beautiful design gets attention, but comfort and usability keep users coming back. If Vision Pro isn’t easy to use or comfortable for long sessions, it won’t matter how sleek it looks—people will move on. ?? Wrapping It Up The Vision Pro fell short for these reasons: - Misses out on leveraging true 3D experiences. - Lacks compelling apps that make it essential. - Can’t compete with the convenience of smartphones. - Puts style over substance and comfort. Vision Pro is may be done for now, but if Apple wants to succeed next time they will need to focus on usability, and a reason for users to choose their new device over what they already have… or Meta‘s Orion ?? ?? I often notice common missteps during design handoff: Here are 3 Key guidelines to make design documentation more effective. ? North Star: Make It Useful, Make It Clear! 1. Writing Principles ? Clarity is Key : Break information into manageable chunks with clear headings. ? User-Centric : Keep the tone conversational and focus on solving specific user problems. ? Stay Relevant : Regularly update content, remove outdated info, and fill knowledge gaps. 2. Types of Documentation ? Component Docs : Describe purpose, usage, variations, and include code examples. ? Usage Guidelines : Provide clear rules, accessibility considerations, and do's and don'ts. Dont forget about those edge cases! 3. Maintenance Strategy ? Keep It Fresh ??: Set a regular update schedule, collect user feedback, and make sure your documentation stays effective and relevant. NOTE: Great documentation isn't just about completeness – it's about being usable, clear, and always up-to-date. (Products are never finished lol) What has been your experience with design handoffs? What works and doesn't work for you? Share below! ?? #DesignSystems #Documentation #UXDesign #ProductDesign #Designcommunity #InteractionDesign #UIDesign #Figma #Penpot #UXUI

?? Will XR Replace Traditional UX? I've been thinking about this question a lot lately, especially with the reveal of Meta Orion and Snap Inc.'s Spectacles. The vision they are selling is a future without screens, with everyone wearing (very thick) AI-enhanced AR glasses ??. But...I think it's a little more nuanced! My thoughts ?? ?? Evolution, Not Replacement ? XR is expanding UX, not replacing it. ? It's just a new medium. Traditional interfaces won't disappear, just like smartphones didn't replace desktops or TVs. ? You WILL still need to learn new design skills and principles. Think of it as adding more tools to your toolkit! Gotta be Multi-Modal ?? https://lnkd.in/gej6P7PH ?? The Future is Hybrid: ? Not every task needs immersion! Some experiences work better in 2D, and users will switch between AR and 2D interfaces, expecting a seamless experience. ? The future of interactions will blend traditional and spatial interfaces, incorporate context-aware experiences and seamless transitions between modalities. (users will be multi-modal as well) ?? What This Means for Designers: ? Expand your skill set, don't abandon it. Learn spatial design principles, understand when to use each medium, and focus on user needs, not tech trends. UX is here to stay, but it will expand into XR, and vice versa! The best designers will know how to leverage tech, choosing the right tool for each user need. What's your perspective on the future of UX and XR? #UXDesign #XR #ProductDesign #UXJobs #Hiring #FutureOfTech #DesignThinking #UIDesign #Interactionsdesign #Designcommunity #VR #AR

Impostor Syndrome in Design: Trust Me, You're Not Alone ?? Despite over a decade of designing digital and physical products, I still find myself dealing with impostor syndrome, especially as I jump into XR and spatial computing. I've been designing in VR for years now, but learning about designing for AR/VR experiences feels like starting from scratch, and it's easy to question my abilities. But here's what I've realized: feeling out of your depth means you're pushing boundaries and growing. Design and business (...and life) are all about adaptation and embracing new challenges. ?? It's one of our superpowers! Impostor syndrome is surprisingly common in our field due to rapid changes in tech. We are consistently working at the edge of innovation, but remember these feelings are natural and don't reflect your true capabilities. ? Contrary to what you may think—no one knows what they are doing anyway! Just know you're not the only one. Keep innovating and growing! Repost?? and share your experience ?? if you've felt the same. ?? Figma's has prioritized becoming a full product development tool, as it should. There is a clear gap between dev and design. Hand off and communication between teams has notoriously been messy. It only makes sense that Figma would try to close this gap. If it didn't, some other tool would. All of the features for designers are still there, plus some dev features that help designer better understand the developers perspective. (I love auto layouts). Designers not learning how to thinking or communicate with h cross-functional teams would be a clear misstep in their career. Figma is just trying to better facilitate that interaction. Figma has a lot of problems, but this is not one of them! NOTE: Try Penpot #design #uxui #ui #interactiondesign #figma #productdesign #userexperience

Figma has a problem. But it’s not what you might think. It’s not the unpopular UI 3 update. It’s not the new AI features. The real issue? Figma is shifting focus. It’s becoming less of a tool for designers and more of a bridge for developers. Take the introduction of Variables—it’s a clear sign. Auto-layouts, styles, dev-mode… these aren’t just features. They are Figma’s way of transitioning into a communication tool between designers and developers. Here’s the problem: Figma isn’t addressing designers’ core needs anymore. Design is creative—it’s conceptual. Yet, Figma’s recent updates lean more towards systematizing design, making it harder for the creative aspect to shine. As Figma tries to meet the needs of multiple roles, the designer’s experience becomes more complex and less intuitive. I’ve been looking for alternatives, but there’s none… yet. But I’m certain they’ll come.

The state of UX in 2024: Where do we go from here?

    查看Nathan Ivy的档案

Founder & CEO @ Next Sketch / Industrial Design & Engineering & Human Centered AI Specialist ?? I help my clients craft beautiful and engaging products

?? UX Design in 2024: Beyond the UX Gold Rush ?? 90% of UX challenges have already been solved. Do we really need another button tutorial or drop shadow slideshow? Not really. Lately, it seems like UX has been on repeat, searching for problems to solve, with product updates often making experiences worse rather than better (????). So, in a saturated UX market, where do we go from here? Here are some areas that I believe still need attention: 1?? AI Integration: AI is no longer just a buzzword. We’re using it for everything—from personalization to design automation. It’s time to sharpen those AI skills! Many companies are just throwing AI at the wall to see what sticks. There are significant opportunities to map out and understand useful business applications for AI. ?? 2?? Ethical Design: With great power comes great responsibility. Dark UX patterns are still prevalent in many products. We need to be at the forefront, fighting against unethical UX. We must also use our voices and skills to mitigate some of the adverse effects of digital product consumption. 3?? Mixed Reality: Possibly the biggest opportunity—AR and VR are stepping into the mainstream. We need to be ready for this next big shift. Collaborate with designers across disciplines to bring well-developed design practices to spatial computing. ??? ?? My Take: The "gold rush" is over, but the field is evolving, creating new opportunities. Stay open, and be willing to learn and pivot. ?? Question for You: How are you adapting your skills to meet these new UX challenges? Which trend excites you the most? Let’s discuss in the comments! ?? #UXDesign #DesignTrends #AIinUX #EthicalDesign #FutureOfUX #AR #VR #spatialcomputing #AI
