The last time I was in Vietnam was in 1995. At the time South Korean companies had started to establish trade and investment in a country that was just starting to open up. It's quite amazing to fast forward almost 30 years to see Viettel Group push the country toward regional mobile infrastructure leadership with Open RAN with Qualcomm. Viettel Group Press Release ?? https://lnkd.in/gWhKZ9Nm This is a big deal for Qualcomm which was selected to help Viettel develop an Open RAN kit in-house which was deployed in Hanoi and lit up. It's the first O-RAN 5G network based on Qualcomm's 5G RAN platforms including it X100 5G RAN accelerator and QRU100 5G RAN platform for mMIMO RUs. The press release indicates that over 300 sites will be deployed by Q1 2025. Another interesting note of this announcement is the integration of these sites with Qualcomm's Edgewise SMO which Viettel is integrating with its EMS to manage their heterogenous networks. This is cool. The Edgewise SMO seems to be positioned much like how I outlined in my article in RCR Wireless News a few months back. Thanks to Diana Goovaerts for reaching out to me to get my POV on Red Hat's recent move to acquire Neural Magic to bring in some AI optimization of models and execution across GPUs and CPUs as applications move out across the universe of edges thanks to Edge AI. Speaking of the edge, Red Hat also announced updates to OpenShift and Device Edge platforms that better enable the development, optimized deployment and lifecycle management of of applications deployed across the edge continuum all the way to endpoint devices. Last year, Apple answered Qualcomm's big Snapdragon X Elite announcement with a big Scary Fast event to introduce the M3 Series of Apple Silicon and a host of MacBooks and Macs running on the new family of devices. This year is a bit different. It seems like this year's rollout of the new Apple Silicon M4 family (which was introduced earlier this year with the introduction of the iPad Pro M4), is a prolonged "Silent but Deadly" event. Mix of Christmas & Halloween themes, perhaps? Let me explain. Yesterday, Apple introduced Apple Intelligence across supported iPhones, iPads, and Macs (going back to M1 models). Big deal for the ecosystem, not just the iPhone as many articles continue to fixate on. They also rather silently squeezed out a new iMac M4. Just a day later, we are introduced to the Mac mini M4 which is a huge redesign albeit borrowing generously from the Mac Studio. That's all the silent stuff so far with more likely coming. Now for the deadly part. The new Mac mini comes with a M4 Pro option. Yes, a new 12-core SoC with 8 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores, versus the 6 P-core/ 6 E-core configuration of the previous generation M3 Pro. There is also a 14-core version of the M4 Pro with up to 64 GB of Unified Memory and 273 GB/s of memory bandwidth. Yes, this is very interesting considering Qualcomm X Series SoCs are prime + performance core beasts. Apple is obviously shifting its design perspective and targeting both single and multi thread performance leadership. I guess we will see if Apple continues to release more deadliness in the run up to Halloween. Will there be a M4 Ultra? Scary stuff! For some reason everyone thinks I was in Maui this week. I have not idea why?
