Where you see a bin full of cell phones, I see a fire in waiting. Each of these devices was pulled from a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) we visited recently, filling the bin in a matter of days. Inside every single one? A lithium-ion battery- a major fire risk in a system that is quite literally designed to process fire fuel. This facility got lucky. Many don’t. As our world becomes more electrified, lithium-ion-powered devices are flooding the waste stream, contributing to over 5,000 battery-induced facility fires every year. The risks are growing, but so is the opportunity to build smarter, safer waste systems. This powerful piece by our good friend John Orlando sheds light on the very real dangers of lithium-ion battery fires— insights drawn from his 27 years with the FDNY. His urgent call for the MTA to ban all micromobility devices across its entire transportation network highlights the need for proactive safety measures. If these batteries can explode on a subway or bus, imagine the catastrophic risk when compacted in a recycling truck or crushed at a material recovery facility.
