?? Following Omnibus proposal: What are the next steps? The European Commission’s recent unveiling of the Omnibus package on 26th February 2025 has initiated a new phase in the evolution of the EU’s ESG regulatory landscape. Here are 4 crucial steps for your organisation to take action in your ESG planning: ?? Thresholds: Check if the revised thresholds apply to your group - Make sure to consult advisors or auditors, as there may be several interpretational challenges related to consolidation, employee definitions, and other complexities. ? Prioritisation: If your group is unlikely to fall under the new scope, focus your CSRD journey on overlapping ESG elements to stay ahead: - Industry-agnostic topics such as Double Materiality, Climate, Governance - Industry-specific topics such as employees and pollution This approach also serves as a fallback if the Omnibus proposal is not enacted, ensuring your sustainability efforts remain aligned with broader requirements. ?? Strategy: Leverage your CSRD journey to establish a comprehensive sustainability management system that supports: - Voluntary reporting and interoperability with frameworks like GRI, TCFD, and TNFD - Mandatory reporting under IFRS standards in jurisdictions such as the UK, California, Canada, and China Achieving and maintaining high sustainability ratings like EcoVadis and B-Corp ?? Engagement: Engage actively with stakeholders to understand their specific ESG information needs. - Even under the Omnibus proposal, reporting based on voluntary standards may still be required to meet stakeholder expectations. - Work closely with top management and the Board to align sustainability ambitions and integrate ESG into your broader business strategy. ?? ?? This Week on #ThrowbackThursday: Exxon Valdez – A wake-up call for corporate responsibility On 24 March 1989, the world witnessed a devastating environmental disaster: the Exxon Valdez oil spill. The tanker ran aground in Prince William Sound, Alaska, spilling nearly 11 million gallons of crude oil into the water. The massive spill wreaked havoc on local marine life, destroyed ecosystems, and caused long-lasting damage to the region's fishing industry. ?? The incident was a wake-up call for the global community, highlighting the dangers of inadequate safety measures and poor corporate accountability. It reminded businesses that they must account for the broader consequences of their actions and take a proactive approach to safeguarding the environment. In the aftermath, public outrage pushed for stronger environmental laws and corporate responsibility.
