Our National Security Strategist Eric O'Neill got to speak with Techopedia on Operation Magnus Considering that most cybersecurity efforts are focused on blocking malicious infrastructure but not on taking legal actions against cyber criminals, we asked Eric O’Neill, former FBI and founder of The Georgetown Group and Nexasure AI, how difficult it is to identify a threat actor without seizing the infrastructure and data. “Pinning down a threat actor without grabbing their infrastructure is tough but doable — think of it as digital detective work,” O’Neill said. “Investigators dig into behavioral quirks, IP breadcrumbs, code fingerprints, and even linguistic tells.” “Add a dash of open-source sleuthing and some geopolitical guesswork, and you’ve got a pretty good suspect profile. It’s not as bulletproof as getting your hands on their servers, but it’s enough to point fingers with a bit of confidence, even if some wiggle room remains.” “That said, having the infrastructure and data is a forensic goldmine,” O’Neill said.
