This week, Newton attended International Energy Week, hosted by Energy Institute. It was fantastic to hear from leaders in this sector on the challenges and opportunities in navigating the global energy transition and to catch up with industry peers, working towards the critical national endeavours around decarbonisation and the drive to achieve net zero. At Newton, we're all about making a real impact across UK infrastructure, helping to accelerate and unlock capital programmes and re-engineer operations. We are excited to be part of the journey towards a sustainable energy future! #IEWeek

Here’s an encouraging sounding stat: 82% of fashion organisations are running at least one circular initiative. So, nearly everyone knows about the opportunities of repair, rental, resale, remake and takebacks and are taking some action. But are single initiatives enough anymore? This isn’t just about consumer pressure or even new EU guidelines but a question of ethics and our future: the industry is a bigger polluter than international flights and maritime shipping combined. Isn’t it time for wholescale change? That’s not likely to happen anytime soon, with none of the brands in our research who have a customer-facing circular business model feeling confident to scale it. None. More than a decade since the phrase ‘circular economy’ was highlighted by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Newton has teamed up with the British Fashion Council and Circular Fashion Innovation Network (CFIN) to research the state of circular. The result is our new report: Measuring the State of Circularity in the UK Fashion Industry. It’s tough reading, but there are solutions. If we work together as an industry to spot the win-win opportunities to do the right thing in a financially sustainable way, the next decade will see true transformation. https://ow.ly/H7yN50UUZjx

New report: "AI and the Productivity Revolution in Government" Newton has partnered with Reform Think Tank on their research paper ‘AI and the Productivity Revolution in Government’. The research was based on a series of roundtables with senior figures involved in AI adoption in Government, as well as bringing our own experience of using AI to unlock complexity across departments and systems. The paper outlines eight policy ideas across a range of opportunities for enabling cultural transformation, fostering an innovative mindset, identifying necessary skills and leadership, streamlining adoption processes, and addressing legacy systems, data quality, and access issues. Take a look at the full report below.

??NEW REPORT?? Today we've published 'AI and the productivity revolution'. Adopting AI more widely across the public sector can make public services significantly more efficient and effective. And yet AI’s deployment throughout the public sector remains patchy and slow. To fully realise AI’s potential a cultural transformation needs to take place in how the public sector operates.? This report, kindly supported by Newton, presents a set of policy ideas for enabling this cultural transformation, and identifies four cross-cutting opportunities:? ?? Mindset: fostering an innovative mindset geared towards AI’s potential.????? ?? People: identifying the right skills, leadership, practices and approach towards trust and ethics.?? ?? Processes: streamlining governance, operational guidance, funding and procurement.? ?? Plumbing: fixing the underlying problems of legacy systems and data quality and access.? It’s truly exciting seeing such momentum building in the newly formed Women in Food network – a community dedicated to building a thriving food and drink industry by preparing and paving the way for more women in the boardroom. Last night, we met again, this time at the Mandrake hotel in London to discuss the fresh challenges and opportunities unfolding in the food industry under the new Labour government. We were thrilled to be joined at the fireside chat by the brilliant Dame Fiona Kendrick, former Chair and CEO of Nestlé UK&I and Judith Batchelar OBE, previously Director of Sainsbury’s Brand and Co-chair of DEFRA’s Food Data Transparency Partnership Eco Working Group. Alongside insightful takeaways from the discussion, the evening provided an opportunity for people to catch up and form new connections. We’re looking forward to a calendar of Women in Food events throughout the year. This is only the start.

The UK has an extraordinary and transformational ambition for its infrastructure, with many organisations preparing to deliver more investment in the next five years than they’ve delivered in the last twenty. Hear from David Hart, Director in our Infrastructure business, who has shared his thoughts on the work we've been involved with in this area, and the opportunities for businesses to harness that investment in the near future. https://ow.ly/nBba50UKQFw

In November, we were once again very proud to support the Women in Defence UK Challenge Interview Series. This conversation between founder Angela Owen OBE and First Sea Lord Sir Ben Key is particularly inspiring due to the humility and honesty shown and the vital issues discussed – from flexible working for parents to the catalysts for change in the Royal Navy and across the Armed Forces. Director Fiona R. Roxburgh introduced the interview with reflections on her own career and the encouraging progress she has seen in opportunities and broader diversity. Newton has been recognized in the 2024 Gartner?’s Market Guide for Supply Chain Strategy, Planning and Operations Consulting. We live in a world of highly sophisticated supply chains, allowing us to access millions of products at lightning speed. But with inflation, emerging threats in key markets and political restraint on sourcing, it’s clear why supply chain issues of availability, affordability and resilience are headline news. Our supply chain work has helped save over £90m a year for a major retailer, seen a 60% reduction in material availability on a major defence programme and introduced stockfile accuracy to a leading grocer, bringing £27m a year benefit to P&L.
