Join us in welcoming?Leah Rambo?as our new president! No stranger to making history, Leah is the first woman of color and tradeswoman to serve as president of NEW. Most recently, she served as the Deputy Director of the U.S. Department of Labor Women’s Bureau. Leah’s experience has prepared her to support NEW in creating more opportunities for women in the construction trades, leading to increased economic independence and a more diverse workforce. Over our history, we have increased the number of women in construction trades from two to seven percent, but we have much more work to do. Leah comes to NEW with an outstanding track record of fostering equity and inclusion within the construction workforce. Her experience, expertise, and passion position her as an ideal leader to guide NEW, say Maureen A. Henegan??and?Steven Sommer, co-chairs of the NEW Board of Directors. Hard Hats. Strong Women. Building the Future.
关于我们
Hard Hats. Strong Women. Building the Future. Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) prepares, trains, and places women in careers in the skilled construction, utility, and maintenance trades, helping women achieve economic independence and a secure future. Founded in 1978, NEW is a sector-based workforce development program that prepares women for careers in the construction, transportation, energy, and facilities maintenance industries. NEW focuses on skilled, unionized jobs in the trades with starting wages averaging $15 per hour, benefits, and a path to higher-wage employment. NEW primarily serves low-income minority women from all five boroughs in New York City. These careers enable NEW graduates to provide a secure future for themselves and their families. Since 2005, NEW has placed over 725 graduates with 32 different regional unions, including 28 in New York City. NEW’s relationships with apprentice directors are strengthened further as NEW continues to refer qualified and successful candidates to each trade. As a result, the Carpenters, Laborers, and Operating Engineers apprenticeship programs each have over 15 percent tradeswomen. In addition, NEW graduates have been placed in over 700 positions in the construction, energy, transportation, green, and facilities maintenance industries.

One of the hardest jobs is being a parent, especially when juggling a career and childcare. The financial and mental strain can be overwhelming. Recognizing this challenge, TradesFutures launched a Child Care Pilot program to make childcare more accessible for tradespeople. In partnership with Nontraditional Employment for Women in New York, NY, and empowHER - Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI, this initiative helps ease the burden—enabling apprentices to focus on building their futures while ensuring their children are cared for in safe, high-quality environments. Meet a few of these incredible apprentices who are balancing it all and creating better futures for their families! #NAW2024

It’s National Apprenticeship Week! This week is a nationwide celebration where employers, industry reps, labor organizations, workforce partners, educational institutions, and government agencies highlight the impact of registered apprenticeships. NYC Talent kicked off #NationalApprenticeshipWeek with a series of events around the city with our public and private partners. First, our Apprenticeship Accelerator Team joined the New York Jobs CEO Council for their National Apprenticeship Week 10 Years of Engagement, Expansion, and Innovation Breakfast! This event featured a powerful panel discussion and networking session featuring three extraordinary youth apprentices. They shared their inspiring journeys, the challenges they overcame, and the invaluable lessons they’ve gained through their apprenticeship experiences: Ashley Hobbs?of Accenture described her apprenticeship as "invigorating"?and shared: "Being an apprentice changed my life and opened doors I never imagined. Meet apprentices where they are, recognize their strengths, and empower them to succeed." Ignacio Valdez?of Aon reflected on how his apprenticeship was "transformative."?He explained: "It taught me to own my career and gave me the tools to grow. Apprentices excel when they’re given meaningful work and the opportunity to make an impact." Chagail Ouedraogo?of Zurich Insurance called her experience "engaging"?and highlighted the immersive nature of apprenticeships: "Unlike classroom learning, apprenticeships let me apply my knowledge in real-time while building a meaningful career. Never underestimate the value of the diverse perspectives apprentices bring to your organization." Later in the day, NYC Talent's Abby Jo Sigal, Miles Elijah Gamble and Matthew Walker, MPP attended the Consortium for Worker Education hosted a hiring hall to support recent graduates of the Nontraditional Employment for Women(NEW) pre-apprenticeship program and other jobseekers. In coordination with Pathways to Industry and Construction Careers, participants interacted with several unions and firms seeking employment in "non-traditional" work sectors ranging from construction, transportation, to manufacturing and building maintenance. Participants also received on-site resume and interview assistance to prepare them for same-day interviews.
