BETHPAGE CONTAMINATION Several drums with toxic chemicals were found buried underneath Bethpage Community Park in Long Island last spring. They were buried there for a few decades. This site was owned by Northrop Grumman, the aerospace giant. The contamination traced back to the 50s when chemicals where dumped into the ground. The community park has been closed for over 20 years. The Town of Oyster Bay has been requesting Grumman conduct a more thorough and deeper clean up of the community park, one that would be an expansion of their 2013 agreement plan. However, the clean up agreement between the town and Grumman has been a daunting task leaving community residents without a park in the meantime. This is part of the monumental and important ongoing investigation into the Bethpage contamination by Paul LaRocco, Associate Editor, Investigations at Newsday Media Group. Great TV piece by Virginia Huie ?? Additionally, you can't miss out on this great documentary Newsday Investigations produced earlier this year. https://lnkd.in/ehc8WEpH
THE COST OF CONTAMINATION:A Newsday investigation found residents are footing the multimillion dollar bill in the legal battle between the Town of Oyster Bay and Northrup Grumman over the pace and scope of the Bethpage Community Park cleanup. The town has paid nearly $3.7 million over the last five years as it pushes Grumman to conduct a more expansive remediation than state environmental regulators require. The legal dispute has stalled progress in the cleanup and escalated costs for residents.

First In Newsday: Las Vegas Sands looks to widen the Meadowbrook Parkway as part of a $150 million plan to mitigate the impact of a new casino-resort on the site of the Nassau Coliseum. The company’s traffic mitigation efforts include adding one lane on each side of a stretch of the 90-year-old Meadowbrook from the Northern State to Hempstead Turnpike and spend an estimated $20 million to build a new water tower to supply the Coliseum site, homes and businesses around it. Too often, survivors of domestic violence who do not have children are shut out of life saving shelter services due to a quirk in the way the State administers funding for shelters. No one's life should be put at risk because of a broken funding formula. Check out my op-ed with Wendy Linsalata in Newsday Media Group to learn what Gov. Hochul can do to fix it https://lnkd.in/eVtH7ZXk #SAFEShelterAct #domesticviolence
