For years, fans of John's Crazy Socks have been showing up unannounced at the company’s Farmingdale headquarters to buy merchandise on the spot, one of the co-founders said. But the staff always has always directed visitors to the retailer’s website to make purchases, because the e-commerce company didn’t have a physical storefront, except for a pop-up shop held for one day in December each year. That changes today, when John’s Crazy Socks will open its first permanent physical store, inside its warehouse brimming with brightly colored socks with diverse designs. My story in today’s Newsday is about bird culture on Long Island. The vibrant avian life here inspired the likes of Walt Whitman and Teddy Roosevelt, and in the post pandemic era has attracted a whole new flock of birders and bird photographers

I’m excited to announce that I was recognized with first place honors by the New York Press Photographers Association’s 90th Annual Photography & Multimedia Contest, 2024 Year in Pictures and Multimedia Contest, in the category, Multimedia – Long Form (Over 5 minutes). In our story, “Faces Of A Crisis,” Newsday spent a year following individuals to better understand who they are and illustrate an overwhelmed immigration system that would become central to the presidential election. I share this prestigious NYPPA honor with my overwhelmingly talented Newsday colleagues Alejandra Villaroca and John C. Williams. It’s an honor to work for a news outlet like Newsday, that shows its’ commitment towards human interest and immigration stories. New York took another step toward requiring electric heating and appliances in all new homes, as a key state regulator advanced proposed changes to the state building code. The State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council voted to incorporate provisions of the All-Electric Buildings Act in its latest building code update. The proposal remains subject to public review and could be adopted as soon as July.
