Empowering the next generation with knowledge and training to end factory farming.

关于我们

New Roots Institute (formerly Factory Farming Awareness Coalition) is a nonprofit organization empowering the next generation with knowledge and training to end factory farming. Through interactive, high school and college lessons, we inspire critical thinking and dynamic discussions about the connections between industrial animal agriculture and current key issues impacting us all—like animal welfare, climate change and environmental sustainability, human rights, and personal and public health. Through our Leadership Program, we offer fellowships for students motivated to dig deeper into the impacts, and solutions, of factory farming—while being trained in effective communication, advocacy, and leadership skills. Upon completing the fellowship, alumni go on—with our continued support—to develop and empower other leaders to create change in their communities toward our shared goal of ending factory farming.

Can a lesson on factory farming really connect to any subject? ?? According to New Roots Institute educator, Josh Kidwell, “Since factory farming affects so many aspects of life, education about it can empower students to think critically, make informed choices, and engage with real-world issues.” He believes that no matter the subject, "We can easily find connections like environmental degradation, public health concerns, geography and land use, food justice, technology used in agriculture, and diet-related diseases to tie into existing curriculums.” Swipe to discover how Josh is empowered by the students he teaches!

  • Jessica Cohen, a fellow at New Roots Institute, has successfully advocated for the inclusion of plant-based snacks at Cornell University. ?? Through months of collaboration with the school's Head of Retail Locations, Meng Wei Hsu, Jessica, and fellow Lilly Smith have ensured that plant-based snack options are available at cafes and convenience stores across campus. Their accomplishment highlights the impact of student-led campaigns in promoting sustainable and inclusive food choices for all. ?? “It's cool seeing these changes coming from students at schools all over the country.” Jessica says. "It might feel like a small change, but all these advocates acting together are making a much bigger change.”
