Because I couldn't focus today, I was surfing the Internet and stumbled upon a reference to Aristotle's Poetics. In it, Aristotle famously suggests that art serves to uncover deeper truths about human experience, revealing insights that go beyond surface-level perception.? It struck me that, similarly, coaches help clients delve into self-discovery and uncover insights and perspectives that might not be obvious in their day-to-day lives. Just as art illuminates hidden truths, a coach can enable clients to recognize their own underlying motivations, values, and potential. Watching objectively, not knowing any of the players, I found myself noticing patterns that felt all too familiar. The kids were excited, driven, and the crowd was behind them. But I couldn’t help but slip into coaching mode, seeing clear parallels between this team and the dynamics I’ve seen in many business teams. Here’s what I noticed: ? Some players ???????? ?????????? ???????? ?????? ???????? ?????????? ??????????????????—they understood their purpose and played confidently. ? Others ???????????? ???? ?????? ?????? ????????’?? ???????? ???????? ???? ????—they had the drive but lacked direction. ? And a few ???????? ?????????????????? ???? ????????—hesitant to make mistakes, they held back instead of contributing fully. The coach started with the first-string players. They were sharp and played well… until fatigue set in, and mistakes started. By the second period, they were on the bench, and the new lineup was up against a daunting score: 23-10. The pressure on these players was palpable. When the second-string players took over, they struggled. When it was time to inbound the ball, no one stayed behind to receive it. They all sprinted to the other end of the court, and the ref had to step in to teach them the basics: two players must stay back to inbound the ball. Tentatively, the two most nervous players returned. The opposing team, sensing their uncertainty, seized the moment—an intercept, a quick score, and the gap widened. Final score: 45-10. ????????????????: Here’s the thing: just as on the court, a business can’t rely solely on its “stars.” ???? ?????????? ????????????, ?? ???????? ?????????? ?????????? ???????????? ???? ???????? ?????????????????? ???? ?????????? ???????? ?????? ?????????????????? ???? ???????????????????? ??????????. Confidence. It changes EVERYTHING. My incredibly shy, introverted 15-year-old recently did something he previously thought impossible. He passed the American Red Cross Lifeguard Exam (including deep water rescue). And then … boom. He’s volunteering for events to help little kids (hence the getup) encouraging his brother to do the same, looking to expand to new things he previously wasn’t interested in with a confidence that becomes a 30-year-old. Why? Because he got that first REALLY BIG win. Ok, I know … some of this just comes with maturing. But when we are in our 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond, what do we do when we are stuck? When the future prospects feel scary? When we see the outcome we desire but aren’t sure the path is something we can handle?? Get a win that puts the wind beneath your wings - or the unicorn horn on your head. We can do this. We can be like Will. If you need a win you are afraid of, let me know.
