Our "Inside The Gilded Age” Tour has been renewed for another season! As you await Season 3 of HBO's “The Gilded Age” (rumored to be premiering this fall), relive the glamour of this Emmy Award-winning series by touring four of the breathtaking Newport Mansions that provided authentic settings for the drama. "Inside The Gilded Age” is a guide-led tour that takes you to Marble House, The Breakers, Chateau-sur-Mer and The Elms. You will see the ballroom where Gladys Russell had her debut, the billiard room where George strikes a secret deal, the bedroom where he spurned the advances of his wife’s maid, the dining room where Bertha hosted a dinner for the Duke of Buckingham, and the kitchen where the servants work, dine and gossip. The tour also visits the Russells’ Newport cottage (we call it The Elms), Mrs. Astor’s Newport home, Mamie Fish’s New York townhouse, Oscar van Rhijn’s bedroom, the room where Alderman Morris sealed his fate, and more. Along the way, your guide will share anecdotes about the complex process of filming in these historic house museums. The tour will be offered on Fridays in May and June. Transportation is provided from the Gateway Center in downtown Newport. Now is the time to advocate for museums! President Trump's recent Executive Order on March 14 has raised concerns for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which plays a vital role in supporting libraries and museums across the nation. Despite representing only 0.0046% of the federal budget, IMLS efficiently provides critical resources to libraries and museums in all 50 states and territories. This EO would essentially gut IMLS within seven days. In Rhode Island, heritage tourism has contributed over $1.4 billion to the state's economy, showcasing the significant economic impact of museums. Nationally, museums contribute over $50 billion annually to the country's economy, while the global heritage tourism market size has grown to $564 billion in 2022, with projections to reach $714.4 billion by 2028. It's crucial to take action by contacting your members of Congress. With Congress members currently in their home districts, reach out to both their federal and district offices to voice your support for museums. Passengers can ride Route 67 to popular tourist destinations such as the Newport Mansions, Cliff Walk, Audrain Automobile Museum, International Tennis Hall of Fame and more.
