Newman Architects is a collaborative design studio based in New Haven, Connecticut, and led by five principals: A. Brooks Fischer, AIA; José Hernández, AIA, NOMA, LEED GA; Melinda Agron, AIA, NOMA, LEED GA; Peter Newman, Assoc. AIA; and Richard Munday, AIA. Together, our staff of thirty forms a knowledge-driven architectural practice with a vision to work collaboratively to shape space and expand possibilities. From our new office space near the New Haven Green, Newman provides comprehensive architectural services from community engagement, programming, and conceptual design through construction administration and post-occupancy evaluation for higher education, commercial, K-12, library, civic and community projects. Our work has been acknowledged for its excellence in design, management, sustainability, and team collaboration with over 150 awards and—most importantly—longstanding relationships with and ongoing endorsement from our clients. Herbert Newman founded our firm in 1964 with a commitment to creating functional, nurturing environments that have a sense of belonging to the communities they serve. In working towards our contemporary mission to create places of enduring value that serve, sustain, and enrich life, we are driven by six core values that define our approach to our work and to our interactions with each other: capability, curiosity, integrity, belonging, agility, and care. Our work balances fundamental design principles that respond to fundamental human needs with the flexibility to respond to evolving social and technological demands. Our aim is to create lasting architecture with clear patterns of organization, straightforward yet sensitive geometries, plentiful access to natural light, shared paths and places for community, universal accessibility, and environmental, social, and economic sustainability. We are honored to share that the Wesleyan University Frank Center for Public Affairs has earned a LEED-NC Gold rating! Completed at the beginning of 2024, this fall marks the second semester the Frank Center addition and renovated spaces have been in full use by students and faculty. ? The project removed physical barriers to accessibility and integrates a range of sustainable design features, including radiant heating and cooling, displacement ventilation, prototype sustainable landscaping, and a green roof. It is also one of the first projects on campus to utilize the in-progress campus loop conversion from steam to hot water—a key component of Wesleyan’s master plan for carbon neutrality by 2050. ? In addition to the incorporation of sustainable features and practices, the project preserves the buildings architectural legacy and original character, while simultaneously introducing modern features and flexible spaces that foster student collaboration. ? The new Frank Center combines existing brick with contemporary design, creating a space that honors the past and looks to the future. ? In collaboration with the City of New Haven, Gilbane Development Company, and Xenolith Partners, we welcome all community members to come and learn more about the project and to participate in conversation about shaping the design and ideas for ground floor uses. ? Last Friday, Cristian Oncescu, RA, AIA, Associate at Newman, spoke at the 2024 Yale Alumni Real Estate Association Conference, providing insight into how artificial intelligence can be incorporated into the world of design and construction and how Newman is exploring the use of this quickly evolving technology. He accompanied fellow panelists, Rish Gosine (Managing Director and Head of Alpha Investment Intelligence & Innovation at Pennybacker Capital), Christine Wendell (Co-Founder and CEO at Pronto Housing), and Cherie Santos-Wuest (Managing Partner at Celadon Venture Advisors, LLC). ? Christian joined Newman in 2021 and has since made a significant impact with his work on our higher education and commercial projects. He is an integral part of our Design Methods Technologies Knowledge Group, supporting the integration of visualization technology and AI tools into our design processes. Our team recently gathered at University of Connecticut to celebrate the opening of Connecticut Hall with the University's leadership, students, and alumni, as well as State Representatives.? ? ? Newman served as architect of record in partnership with design-builder KBE Building Corporation for the new seven story, 465,000 square foot residence and dining hall. Designed by Sasaki, the building houses 650 beds in suite-style units for UConn Honors Program students, the Nursing Learning program, and the Wellness Community. The building also contained 500-seat dining hall, reception area, common areas, seminar rooms, flex spaces, offices, laundry, mail room, game room and bike storage. ?
