This week, Michigan Central, Newlab, and Newlab member Airspace Link, Inc. gathered leaders from the advanced air mobility community at the AAIR Forum for a day of multi-panel programming and the launch of the Advanced Aerial Innovation Region (AAIR). AAIR was created by Michigan Central and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to accelerate commercial drone development and position Michigan as a leader in next-generation aerial mobility. AAIR encompasses a 3-mile radius of tech surrounding Michigan Central which has been outfitted with shared infrastructure and services for Small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS) operators, manufacturers, and demand partners. This includes specialized infrastructure at Newlab and The Station which enables radar and tracking of drone activity and supports the development of a robust, secure aerial ecosystem. Newlab is proud to partner with Michigan Central to address accessibility, safety, tech equity, and regulatory challenges by designing first of a kind pilot programs for commercial drone applications, bringing advanced technologies together with industry and government partners to demonstrate the potential of this opportunity space across real-world use cases like: medical supply delivery, consumer goods transport, manufacturing logistics, and infrastructure inspection. With financial support and partnership from MDOT Aeronautics, Michigan Central provides resources for foundational physical and digital infrastructure, demand generation, community engagement, and skills training. Flight data from these operations will advance the goal of achieving Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS), a critical step in reducing barriers to commercial drone usage and enabling longer-range operations across Southeast Michigan. Currently in the United States, approximately 2.9 million semi-trucks are operational, transporting essential goods nationwide. While vital to modern life, these vehicles are creating an adverse effect on our climate. Collectively, they emit around 413 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, contributing to the 23% of total greenhouse gas emissions coming from the transportation sector. Meet Zach Schieffelin, Founder & CEO of Civilized Cycles. He and his team are developing the critical technology needed to address this challenge at Newlab in Detroit. The company produces light electric commercial vehicles, notably the Semi-Trike, offering a sustainable alternative to carbon-intensive vehicles like semi-trucks. The Semi-Trike merges the cargo capacity of a van with the minimal carbon footprint and cost-effectiveness of an e-bike, making it ideal for urban freight and last-mile delivery. A recipient of the Michigan Central Scale Fund award, Civilized Cycles has initiated a pilot program in collaboration with Lime, Newlab, and Michigan Central. This initiative aims to assess the Semi-Trike's impact before full-scale commercialization to get the trike’s in cities across the country, and world. All striving to reduce the substantial carbon emissions associated with traditional freight transport. Learn more about Zach and the Semi-Trike below.

Meet Justin Kosmides and Chris Nolte, the founders of Bloom, an operations-as-a-service marketplace that connects mobility companies with suppliers, manufacturers, and distribution partners. Bloom’s story began at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where Justin was building an e-bike company at Newlab while Chris was leading a bike-centered retail store and community nearby. They bonded over the challenges of entrepreneurship and shared a vision of easing the path to scale for mobility companies in the U.S. Now, they’re helping to shape the future of hardware manufacturing and operations from Detroit — collaborating with Newlab, Michigan Central, Beacon MFG, and hundreds of other service partners to reshore manufacturing for mobility solutions — empowering early stage companies and some of the largest OEMs in the city and beyond. Most recently, MoonBikes has recently teamed up with Bloom to relaunch in the US Market and scale their North American operations from Newlab at Michigan Central. Watch below to learn more!
