Last week at #FinanceInCommon2025 in South Africa, one thing was clear: the way we finance sustainability must evolve. Four key takeaways stood out: 1?? Just Transition must truly be just – More focus is needed on agriculture, livelihoods, and reskilling workers. 2?? Water crisis ≠ lack of capital – The issue lies in financing structures, not in available funds. 3?? From ‘Do No Harm’ to exponential impact – Impact targets must be at the core of financial decisions. 4?? Better impact measurement – Financial institutions have plenty of data but lack collaboration on what truly matters. #SustainableFinance #FoodSystems #FiCS25
Last week I attended #FinanceInCommon2025 where one overarching takeaway stood out to me: The way we finance sustainability must evolve. This was particularly evident to me in four ways: 1.???Need for re-centering the “Just” in #JustTransitions Throughout the conference, I was struck by how little the social aspects of the Just Transition was discussed. A true Just Transition must address: --- Agriculture and food systems, where 65% of Africa’s workforce is directly or indirectly dependent on agriculture for their livelihood. If we don’t integrate agriculture and food systems better into just transition financing, we’re missing a huge piece of the puzzle. --- Livelihood protection, particularly for workers in fossil fuels and resource-intensive industries. As we progress to greener energy, we are also progressing to more labour-efficient and higher-skilled industries, and we need to ensure that workers are retrained and alternative jobs are created. ? 2.???Water: A financing challenge, not a capital shortage It was striking to hear Johann Lubbe (DBSA Water Partnership Office) emphasize that “money is not the issue”—there’s plenty of capital, but Africa’s water crisis remains underfunded due to a lack of bankable projects, poor project structuring, and weak credit-enhancement mechanisms. Key takeaways from this discussion: --- #SDG6 (Water & Sanitation) cannot be achieved without a fundamental rethink of how water infrastructure financing is structured. --- Credit-enhancement mechanisms are needed to attract private capital, Blended finance and PDBs must play a stronger de-risking role --- Technical assistance to better structure projects is critical for developing investable water projects ? 3.???From “Do No Harm” to exponential impact Public Development Banks have traditionally operated with a “Do No Harm” principle, ensuring investments avoid negative social or environmental consequences. Public and private finance must take a more proactive approach to sustainability, embedding impact targets into portfolios rather than treating impact as a side effect, and make impact finance push the ceiling rather than securing the floor. 4.??Improving Impact Measurement & Management (IMM) One of the strongest themes across discussions was the urgent need for better impact measurement and management. It was highlighted how financial institutions have enough, even too much, data but they don’t collaborate on what really matters to measure. ? At NewForesight, we are aligning our IMM work with the Operating Principles for Impact Management (OPIM) to ensure that impact is consistently measured, comparable, and actionable. It’s not just about tracking planned impact—but also ensuring that lessons learned actively shape better investment decisions. De LLE Coalitie brengt fabrikanten, retailers, reparateurs en maatschappelijke organisaties samen om de levensduur van elektronica te verlengen en circulariteit in de sector te stimuleren. I’m Laura van den Born, a Sustainability Consultant in the TransMission Domain, and I joined NewForesight at the beginning of this year. My passion for sustainability started years ago when my sister’s studies sparked my curiosity. Her insights, combined with the urgency of global challenges, led me to pursue a sustainability master’s in Rotterdam—and ultimately, a career in the field. What drew me to NewForesight was its ambition to drive large-scale sustainable impact. Rather than just scratching the surface, we tackle complex challenges systemically, creating real and lasting change. As a Project Manager, I oversee day-to-day activities, such as our current work with a leading Dutch bank to accelerate sector-wide transformation. Within my work, I embrace change—even if it doesn’t always come naturally… A former manager once told me, "change is the only constant," and as someone who thrives on structure and organization, this mindset is something I’m continuously learning to adopt. In a fast-evolving space like sustainability, adaptability is key, and while it’s not always easy, it’s a valuable lesson to keep in mind. My best advice for those starting out is that you don’t need to know everything. As a consultant, your role isn’t just about having all the answers—it’s about asking the right questions, building strong relationships, and guiding clients through complex challenges with an open and positive mindset. Afgelopen maandag kwamen we bij Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden samen voor de tweede True Value Language workshop, na onze eerste geslaagde sessie in december. Met een groeiende groep van betrokken partijen, bij elkaar gebracht door initiator Rabobank, zetten we opnieuw een stap richting een gezamenlijke taal voor duurzaamheid in de Nederlandse landbouwsector. Wat is het belang van een gezamenlijke taal (True Value Language)? ?? Boeren worden steeds meer afgerekend op hun duurzaamheidsprestaties, maar een duidelijke en eenduidige systematiek ontbreekt nog. ?? Bedrijven en ketenpartijen moeten transparanter rapporteren, maar zonder uniforme meetmethodes is vergelijken lastig. ?? Duurzamer werken mag niet ten koste gaan van het verdienmodel van de boer – waardering en beloning zijn essentieel. ?? Er zijn al veel initiatieven bezig met een transparante en eerlijke manier om duurzaamheid te meten en waarderen, maar gebrek aan co?rdinatie en afstemming zorgt voor versnippering en ineffici?ntie. Tijdens de workshop: ?? Bouwden we voort op en concretiseerden we het ontwerp van True Value Language. ?? Werkten we in interactieve sessies aan een Plan van Aanpak van de ontwikkeling van True Value Language. ?? Dachten deelnemers actief mee over de vervolgstappen en hun rol daarin. ? Het was een geslaagde middag vol inspirerende gesprekken en waardevolle inzichten. We kijken uit naar de volgende fase en blijven werken aan een transparant, eerlijk en duurzaam voedselsysteem. This week has been heavy. Amidst political turmoil, staged humiliation, and deepening concerns for global security, it can feel impossible to focus on anything else. But we do. During the African Fine Coffees Association (AFCA) conference in #Tanzania this week, other challenges were put on the agenda. The coffee sector's 12 million smallholders - the backbone of global supply - live in persistent poverty, many earning far below a living income. Even with record prices hitting $4.40 per pound, systemic barriers continue to prevent farmers from truly thriving. Yet, in the heat of Dar es Salaam, I witnessed efforts to change this reality. A selection of initiatives that I recommend you to check out: 1?? The International Coffee Organization and its Coffee Public-Private Task Force is working on its commitment to drive action to close the living income gap in at least 21 ICO producing countries by 2030 - a powerful mandate and necessary commitment. 2?? The Committee on Sustainability Assessment (COSA) shows that data-driven solutions matter, implementing models to measure farmers' cost of production - with Rwanda as a recent example. 3?? Coffee trader Sucafina is proving that multiple income drivers (e.g. yields, cost of production, price) can directly improve farmer resilience, showing promising results in Rwanda. 4?? Ethos Agriculture is not only building coffee enterprises in East Africa, but also holding the sector accountable through its bi-annual Coffee Barometer - a crucial lens on corporate commitments (latest report: 2023). 5?? Elucid's is tackling a challenge often overlooked: #healthcare access. Their work in Ghana, Uganda, and beyond is proving that healthcare is not just a necessity, but can be an economic game-changer towards farmer resilience.
