NewForce Program Director, Aaron St. Clair, helped judge the 2023 Congressional App Challenge for West Virginia’s Second Congressional District Two, a competition that motivates students to compete with peers in their own district by creating and exhibiting a software application of their own creation. Yesterday Aaron met his congressman, Alex X. Mooney, for the challenge's award ceremony to honor Lucas Kniska and Ethan Tomlinson, juniors at Trinity Christian School in Morgantown, as the winners of the 2023 challenge. Lucas and Ethan created the app ObjecTracer, which uses artificial intelligence to help identify security threats. They were particularly focused on using the app to improve school safety. "The thing that impressed upon me the most was that each of the submissions to the challenge used technology to solve real world problems," said Aaron. "They showed a great degree of both insight, empathy and ingenuity. These sessions offer valuable insights and career advice, empowering current students and program alumni to advance in their careers and explore pathways to success in the tech industry. This month we were joined by?Lindsey C., a NewForce alumni who is now working as a Lead Engineer at Booz Allen Hamilton??? Lindsey works primarily on a CDC contract building custom B2B applications. She spoke to our group about the triumphs and failures that she has experienced both through and after NewForce, while also touching on building new skills and the need for continued education for engineers. Last Friday NewForce Cohort 8 hit Charleston, WV for their Professional Development Day, a day dedicated to networking, learning more about their fellow classmates, and receiving brand new headshots (oh, and t-shirts). NewForce is full-time and fully virtual. Over the course of the six-month program, students are in a virtual classroom over Zoom with their cohort every weekday from 9am–4pm, so Professional Development Day is an exciting time to step away from the computer and get together in-person.
