Earlier this week, members of our Human Resources team spent the day with Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) students at their regional Career Development Conference at Washburn University in Topeka, KS, sharing information and insights into the funeral service profession. JAG is a non-profit which partners with schools to provide academic and other supports to ensure students earn their diploma. JAG also gives students a chance to explore career opportunities and practice soft skills which will help them to transition to post-secondary education, military service, or into the workforce after graduation. | COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT | Toledo, Ohio | Built in 2010, our Southwest Toledo chapel is run by a talented team of 16 funeral service professionals. Our longest-tenured colleague is Brenda G., a member of our support staff who joined us shortly after we opened our doors. Together, our associates have over 75 years of experience serving the Toledo community, and three of our funeral directors have spent over 30 years in funeral service. Toledo is a large industrial city, and the fourth largest in Ohio. Nicknamed “Glass City” for its glass production, it is a major trade center in the Midwest. Our staff members enjoy a wide variety of activities outside of work, including spending time with their families at a Toledo Walleye Hockey game, catching a Toledo Mud Hens baseball game, visiting the Toledo Zoo, the Toledo Museum of Art or the Imagination Station. Many are active in their church communities and volunteer for service activities and church services. Other favorite pastimes include participating in their children or grandchildren’s school and sports activities. Open communication, humor and encouragement are hallmarks of this team. From their daily huddle each morning to review the needs of the day, to music breaks during stressful times, and frequent celebrations of team member birthdays, work anniversaries, holidays and special events, they make the time to support and celebrate each other. Toledo offers a robust apprenticeship, and the team is currently supporting one apprentice through their program. Maxwell C., a recent graduate from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, has been a great addition to the team. Toledo enjoys the support of many returning families.
