The New York State Public Health Association (NYSPHA) Climate Committee advocated for K-12 climate education with the Climate Resilience and Education Task Force (CRETF) at the State Capitol on March 10th. The push is to make Climate Education part of New York State’s Portrait of a Graduate, beginning in 2025-2026. Twenty-five students from across the state - ranging from NYC to Buffalo and to the North Country - shared their stories with legislators to persuade them to pass Assembly Bill A4876/Senate Bill S2430. These bills are sponsored by Assemblywoman Jo Anne Simon and Senator Andrew Gounardes. It was a great exercise in civic engagement! The federal government may be saying, “you’re fired,” but New York is saying “You’re hired!” New Yorkers know talent when they see it, and Governor Kathy Hochul is welcoming federal workers with open arms. Learn more ?? ny.gov/wewantyou.
The New York State Public Health Association (NYSPHA) Climate Committee joined five CRETF (Climate and Resilience Education Task Force) colleagues to advocate for the Climate Education bill at the state Capitol on Wednesday, 2/26. This is the third time in as many weeks they were drumming up support for this bill, endorsed by the NYS Education Department. If a half million dollar appropriation is included in the state budget, it will help schools “green” their infrastructure and transportation systems, and help them integrate climate education K-12 into existing state standards. The group met with several state legislators including Assemblymembers Anna Kelles and Andrew Hevesi. If you’re interested in getting involved with our climate efforts, please visit our website. https://www.nyspha.org Also consider joining us at our upcoming event Climate Health is Public Health: A Night at the Museum of the Earth on April 30! Assemblymember Kelles is one of our special guests and will be moderating our youth climate panel! https://lnkd.in/eTbBv_ai #climatechangeshealth #publichealth
