Thank you, Dr.Apeksha Phulgirkar for coming all the way from Tennessee for our event! Your research is vital to helping organizations like ours to find solutions to the oral health care crisis not only in New York State but across the country. We are grateful for your hard work!
A Day of Learning at Capital Region Community Mobile Dental Event: Today was an incredibly special day as I attended the Capital Region Community Dental Event at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY. As someone passionate about mobile healthcare solutions for accessible oral care, this experience provided invaluable insights into what it takes to make these life-changing initiatives successful. By observing the workflow, staff coordination, and mobile van design, I gained a deeper understanding of how these solutions address oral health disparities. The event, expertly organized by the New York State Dental Foundation (NYSDF) with support from Kare Mobile screened 137 patients, providing emergency extractions and vital care. Follow-up care will be coordinated by the community dental health coordinator team for those needing further treatment. Today’s event not only taught me valuable lessons but also prompted deep reflection on the urgent need for accessible dental care in underserved communities. These mobile vans are fully equipped for everything from root canals to implants. So why aren’t these solutions being scaled nationwide? They offer an incredibly effective way to provide care where it’s needed most. During my internship with NYSDF, I studied the dental care challenges in nursing homes, particularly for residents with dementia. Limited staff, funding, and coverage make access to care difficult, especially in rural areas. My project explored the potential of mobile dental care to address these gaps—stay tuned for more! This experience has been a defining moment in both my internship and MPH program, further reinforcing my passion for dental public health. I’m deeply grateful to NYSDF, especially Stacy McIlduff, CFRE , CFRE (Executive Director), for this opportunity. I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to Dr. Kwane Watson and the Kare Mobile team for guiding me through the intricacies of mobile dental vans. Your dedication to making dental care accessible to all is truly inspiring! I’m excited to contribute to these efforts and support the incredible work of NYSDF to serve our communities! #DentalCare #MobileHealthcare #HealthcareAccess #PublicHealth #NYSDF #KareMobile

Bravo, Buffalo!!
The City of Buffalo is set to resume fluoridating its water supply this fall, according to the Buffalo Water Authority. After halting the program in 2015 without adequate public notice, the city is now committed to ensuring residents receive the optimal fluoride levels. Expect fluoridated water to flow back into your homes by the end of August or early September, supporting strong, healthy smiles for all! ???? ??Learn more: https://loom.ly/Citlnyk #BuffaloNY #WaterFluoridation #OralHealth

Meet Dr.Apeksha Phulgirkar, a healthcare professional with a diverse background in dental surgery, clinical research, and public health. She is an international dentist, earning her degree in oral surgery in India, and is now pursuing a master's degree in public health with a focus on Global Health at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. Her passion lies in addressing issues of healthcare accessibility and affordability, and particularly mobile healthcare solutions that ensure everyone has access to cutting-edge oral care, regardless of socioeconomic status or geographical location. ? At the New York State Dental Foundation, we have big dreams for oral health care in New York! Dr. Phulgirkar is currently completing her Public Health Practicum with us and will be conducting a needs assessment to better understand the existing mobile dental care available to vulnerable populations in New York State and will determine the feasibility of a future investment in a mobile dental unit of our very own.
