#NYFoodHistory: The Half-Moon Cookie The half-moon cookie is a beloved treat with deep roots in Upstate New York, specifically the Utica area. Unlike its more famous cousin, the black and white cookie, which originated in New York City, the half-moon cookie has a distinct identity. The culinary journey of this iconic cookie begins at Hemstrought's Bakery in Utica, which started baking half-moons around 1925. These cookies, with their characteristic domed shape and split-top frosting (one half chocolate, the other vanilla), quickly became a local favorite. While the exact origins of the half-moon cookie's shape and flavor remain somewhat shrouded in mystery, its enduring popularity is undeniable. Today, it's a cherished symbol of Upstate New York and continues to be enjoyed by generations of cookie lovers. Photo from @uticabakery
