Today marks the 100th birthday of Pierre Boulez (1925–2016), the composer and conductor who brought an adventurous spirit to the New York Philharmonic as Music Director from 1971 to 1977. Boulez is famous for his Rug Concerts where he had the orchestra level seats in the hall removed and had people sit on the floor with cushions while the Orchestra played contemporary music. Here's a glimpse of what they looked like! The audience sat on massive red rugs, giving the series its name. In commemoration of his centennial, the New York Philharmonic Shelby White & Leon Levy Digital Archives has digitized and made available more than 13,000 pages of archival materials from his tenure. Comprising personal correspondence, planning papers, audience response surveys, and more, the documents provide a snapshot of the musical movements of the era, and of the innovative ways in which Boulez brought them to the Philharmonic’s stage. Earlier this month, Lina González-Granados conducted the World Premiere of the orchestrated version of “Out & Up†by 18-year-old Haeon Lee on the Young People’s Concert, “The Future is Female.†? Haeon is an alum of @LunaCompositionLab, which was founded to provide mentorship and resources for young female, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming composers.? ? Of her piece, Haeon says: “Out & Up challenges the idea that going forward, upward, and outward is going in the right direction, or the direction of progress. Sometimes we need to look inward, head downward and backward, and even stay in place for a while to get to the places we want to be.â€
