New York Food Allergy

We are New York’s FIRST Food OIT Practice - OIT=Oral Immunotherapy Food Allergies are a Growing Epidemic: More than 15 million Americans, approximately 5% of adults and 8% of children, have a food allergy and nearly 40 percent of these children have already experienced a severe or life-threatening reaction. The studies have revealed that living with food allergies, strict avoidance of the allergen and the fear of accidental exposure, increases anxiety and has a negative impact on a child’s quality of life as well as the family’s quality of life. Food Allergy Treatment is Available: Cutting-edge science. There is good news! Strict avoidance of problem foods is no longer the only way to prevent a reaction. Many promising new treatments are available. Among the currently available successful treatment options is Oral Immunotherapy (OIT), it is proven to result in desensitization and tolerance overtime. We have successfully completed OIT for many foods for children and adults (from 12 months to 50 years of age!). The successfully completed foods include peanut, milk, egg, wheat, soy, sesame, almond, cashew, pistachio, walnut, pecan, hazelnut, chickpea, sunflower seeds, and many more for severe life-threatening food allergies. We have treated patients not only from various parts of NY State and all surrounding states but also from 15 countries. We pride ourselves in creating a custom plan that works for an individual child, adult, and the entire family based on allergy skin tests, blood tests, component tests, and BAT (Basophil Activation Test). We provide onsite testing, blood draw, and BAT in our own research lab (NYAIRL). We average 500-600 oral food challenges per year. The oral food challenges help clear many foods without treatment and help families avoid unnecessary commitment to OIT. Dr. Atul Shah is an American Board Certified Allergy-Immunologist.
