Wednesday, 73 #FDNY Paramedics graduated from the Paramedic Basic program. “Years ago, you stood with hundreds of others and took an oath to dedicate your lives to protecting the lives of millions of New Yorkers. And today, you take that oath a step further. You have put in the time and effort to take your skills to the next level by becoming a Paramedic, now equipped to offer advanced medical care to our neediest New Yorkers,” said FDNY Commissioner Tucker. “The journey to becoming a Paramedic is not an easy one. It demands almost a year of rigorous training, countless hours of practical experience, and a stubborn spirit. It requires the ability to remain calm under pressure, make split second decisions and provide compassionate care to those in need. These individuals have demonstrated all these qualities and more, proving themselves worthy of this promotion,” said Chief of EMS Operations Michael Fields. Paramedics graduating from the FDNY Paramedic Basic program have trained for months at the EMS Academy, at hospitals on clinical internships, and in field rotations, to provide the highest level of pre-hospital care to New Yorkers. The new Paramedics will be assigned to units throughout New York City.

This week, the #FDNY launched a new Brush Fire Task Force in response to the historic increase in brush fires occurring throughout the five boroughs. Made up of fire marshals, fire inspectors, and tactical drone units, the Task Force is visiting areas that have experienced a high number of brush fires in recent weeks in an effort to be proactive about prevention. Tuesday, the Task Force was in the Bronx in Van Cortlandt Park to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the fire area and enhance data and information about the fire to prevent more from occurring.

Through the collaborative efforts of #FDNY Fire Marshals and the Queens District Attorney’s Office, Fire Commissioner Robert S. Tucker and Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz Tuesday announced that a plea deal for significant prison time has been reached in multiple arson cases. Evan Person, 35, was arrested and pled guilty to second-degree arson in satisfaction of the full indictment for setting multiple vehicle fires and a house fire that left two people critically injured. “These reckless acts of arson endangered the lives of New Yorkers and FDNY members. Thanks to the excellent investigative case work of our Fire Marshals and our close collaboration with the Queens District Attorney’s Office, this perpetrator will be behind bars for a long time,” said Fire Commissioner Tucker. “I want to commend everyone involved for their efforts to ensure this dangerous individual does not harm any more New Yorkers.” “This defendant is a serial arsonist who set fire to vehicles and an occupied home over the course of less than an hour in South Ozone Park. The defendant’s reckless actions seriously injured two of home’s occupants and they were hospitalized for more than a month after the incident. We thank our partners at the FDNY Fire Marshals for their collaboration on this case,” said Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz.

Fire Commissioner Robert S. Tucker joined New York City Mayor Eric Adams and city officials on Monday to announce the elevated drought level in a citywide effort to conserve water. During this extraordinarily dry period, the FDNY is encouraging all New Yorkers to take the necessary steps to reduce the chances of a brush fires and help the city conserve water. “Remarkably dry conditions in October and so far in November have resulted in a historic amount of brush fires over the last two weeks, and we need the public to remain vigilant and conserve water so that we can continue to effectively respond to fires when they occur. We thank all New Yorkers who have seen smoke and called 911, and we urge the public to do the same,” said Fire Commissioner Tucker. Report open fire hydrants and street leaks to 311. An open hydrant can release more than 1,000 gallons per minute, which wastes 1.4 million gallons of drinking water in a 24-hour cycle.

Friday, the FDNY celebrated the 100th anniversary of Ladder 152 in Queens. “Protecting a city is no easy task, and we do this as one Department, but so often it comes down to that individual company and that individual firehouse, and what they do that supports our overall mission. For 100 years, this company is still ready to serve and protect the people of this community, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, responding day and night. Protecting the community is difficult work, but that is our mission, and that is what takes place in this firehouse. That is our greatest tradition, always being ready to respond when the alarm sounds. But make no mistake about it, this devotion comes at a high cost, as two members of Ladder 152 have made the Supreme Sacrifice in the performance of their duty during this century of service. Members of Ladder 152 have performed countless acts of bravery and have been awarded four unit citations, and three members of this company have received medals for their heroic lifesaving actions. To all my current members, you now are representing the company. You have the responsibility of honoring all those who came before you. You're also responsible for passing along our traditions to the next generation, teaching the probies as they come through these doors, helping to make them better firefighters, as someone did for you. You are the stewards of this, the greatest job on Earth,” said Assistant Chief Joseph Ferrante.

The FDNY marked 100 years of service of Ladder 151 at a centennial celebration on Friday. Active members, current members, and friends gathered to mark the occasion. "The fire companies have done a phenomenal job of integrating into the neighborhood – while this firehouse was built 100 years ago, it has managed to withstand all the changes that took place here in Forest Hills. We know you are all building relationships with the people who live and work here. We know when you run out the door when the tones go off, that you truly care about the neighborhood you’re working in. It has been that way for 100 years, and we expect that it will continue for another 100 years," said Fire Commissioner Robert S. Tucker. “Even with all the changes to New York City, changes to society in general, and changes to the FDNY, one thing remains the same, and that is the commitment to duty of the firefighters that work in this firehouse and respond on our rigs. Since 1924 firefighters have built a sacred bond with the people of Forest Hills, Rego Park and the surrounding communities. The people know that when they need help, they call the Fire Department, and the Fire Department will be there. That's the way it's been done since 1865, that's the way we do it today, and that's how we will continue to do it into the future. Never forget that,” said Chief of Department John Esposito.
