Congratulations to New York State Industries for the Disabled, Inc. (NYSID) for their award win!
President & CEO, Board Director, Volunteer Board Member, Transformational Change Leader, Workplace Inclusion Authority
Such a huge honor for New York State Industries for the Disabled, Inc. (NYSID) to be named The ANCOR Foundation Community Builder awardee this year. The NYSID team and Board of Directors extends our thanks to one of our many extraordinary partners the New York Alliance for Inclusion and Innovation for nominating us. ANCOR's Community Builder Award honors substantial initiatives undertaken by organizations other than I/DD service providers that create inclusive opportunities for people with I/DD to live fulfilling lives. Established in 2004, the Community Builder Award recognizes organizations that actively seek to amplify the contributions of individuals or groups that are systematically overlooked. I am proud of the policy work we have done with The NY Alliance and Rockefeller Institute of Government on Navigating the Benefits Cliff and understanding the economic impact of disability service providers across New York. We need to keep working together, no one agency can do this on their own. #choosetoinclude

Did You Know? Cerebral palsy is estimated to be the most common lifelong physical disability, affecting about a million people in the US alone. While steps have been made in the right direction, Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day is an annual reminder of the larger push for better healthcare, disability protections, and general quality of life for those with the condition. March 18th is National Trisomy 18 Awareness Day. Trisomy 18 is a serious condition where a baby is born with 3 copies of Chromosome 18 instead of 2. Only 5-10% of affected babies survive to reach their first birthday, however, those who do can live fulfilling lives. Efforts are ongoing to improve survival rates and quality of life for those with Trisomy 18. For Women’s History Month, it’s important to analyze the specific issues that women with I/DD face throughout their lives, often compounded by systemic sexism in place. For example, as women with I/DD age and enter menopause, it's crucial for them and their caretakers to understand common post-menopause conditions. This article serves as a valuable resource for aging women with I/DD and health issues to consider: https://lnkd.in/e8NjhH3q

Every March marks Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. First established in 1987, the month serves as both encouragement for those with I/DD and a promotion of opportunities for them to lead productive, fulfilling lives. This year’s theme from the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities is We’re Here All Year, reminding those of us who work in the I/DD sector that disability work is not a temporary thing.
