March 18th is National Trisomy 18 Awareness Day. Trisomy 18 is a serious condition where a baby is born with 3 copies of Chromosome 18 instead of 2. Only 5-10% of affected babies survive to reach their first birthday, however, those who do can live fulfilling lives. Efforts are ongoing to improve survival rates and quality of life for those with Trisomy 18. Every March marks Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. First established in 1987, the month serves as both encouragement for those with I/DD and a promotion of opportunities for them to lead productive, fulfilling lives. This year’s theme from the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities is We’re Here All Year, reminding those of us who work in the I/DD sector that disability work is not a temporary thing.
