New Voices in Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is a cohort-based leadership program that promotes collaboration among outstanding early- and mid-career scientists, engineers, and medical professionals during a two-year term of service. The program aims to expand the diversity of expertise engaged in the convening and advisory functions of the National Academies while building a network of emerging U.S. leaders to address national and global challenges.

Last week, members of the New Voices program met at the National Academy of Sciences building in #DC for the Fall 2024 New Voices Biannual Meeting. Starting with a peer-knowledge sharing session, members were able to share their knowledge, skills, and personal experiences with the cohort on topics of shared interest. Extreme heat causes more death in the US than all other natural hazards combined. The ?????????????? ??????????? (with added help from my ????????????? group), within the New Voices NASEM of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, supported by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, wanted to take another look at vulnerability to heat waves. In this paper, we wanted to investigate how incorporating regional ???????????? ???????? ???????????????? changes our understanding of ?????????????? ???????? ??????????????????????????? (EHE). ?????? ?????? ????????????, ?????????? ???????????????? ???????????????? ???? ?????????????? ???????? (HCEH), combines three indices – summertime extreme heat days, population older than 65 years, and county’s number of hospital beds per capita. The ?????????????? ???????? ?????????????? ?????????????? ???? ?????????????????????????? ???????? ?????? ?????????????? ?????? ?????????????????? ???? ???????????? ???????? ????????????????. We are hoping this work can be used to set new policies to mitigate the impact of extreme heat across the US. In the 2024 edition of the UNDP's Signals Spotlight, Mariel Lavieri (Cohort 2024-26) and Mitul Luhar (Cohort 2024-26) were among the experts convened by the International Science Council to provide insights that were instrumental in challenging assumptions, refining the authors' thinking, and enhancing the quality of the report.
