Ever stopped to consider what your Health & Safety Representatives need to be successful in their roles? At New View Safety, we see HSRs are being an essential mechanism to help organisations identify and bridge the gap between work-as-imagined and work-as-done. But what do HSRs need to be successful? This week, we are across the ditch in New Zealand with our client, asking a group of HSRs this question. They identified five success factors: 1. Training & Capability: They told us they want to be formally trained, with regular refresher courses as part of training entitlement. This included being well-trained in both systems and interpersonal skills. 2. Communication & Information Sharing: They identified needing creative communication strategies to use with mobile/shift-based teams; and more effective tools than just emails (which may be ignored). 3. Trust & Approachability: HSRs build rapport best through regular face-to-face interactions. They want to be trusted by both managers and workers alike! 4. Engagement & Visibility: They want to actively encourage workers to use safety systems and processes and have consistent contact. 5. Support & Resourcing: This was a big one....the need to have time rostered (not just for meetings) to allow them to do their job effectively. When they are called upon for support, this might require boundaries or clearer role definition. Which success factors are working with your HSRs? Which ones need some work? If you are looking to boost the capabilities of your HSRs, speak with us at New View Safety today. We have supported many of our clients to discover key barriers to performing the HSR role, and helped them to collaboratively redesign the HSR role to not only achieve better compliance but also improve safety performance.

That’s a wrap on a 4-month partnership supporting our client to develop a centralised HSW Management System Framework and a bold 3-year HSW Strategy, anchored in a focus on deep compliance. Huge credit to our client for their clear strategic vision and ambition — we’re excited to see this brought to life.

`Thank you to Macquarie Asset Management and colleagues (especially Joachim Geussens) for the opportunity to present at the Leaders' Forum on the topic of industry-specific safety climate. Industry-specific and even organisationally-specific deployments of safety climate generate more value than off-the-shelf solutions! Great to hear about the impact of our work from our agricultural partners who utilised the bespoke tool.

Thank you to Central Safety Group and Robert D'Elsini from Protech Group for the opportunity to discuss supervisor-led safety communication. We had a great conversation today, and shared the results of our Protech-led research study involving nearly 2,000 responses from labour-hire workers across Australia. Key message: invest in the interpersonal and communication skills of your supervisors, and optimise your pre-start meetings to ensure the best translation into operational benefits!
