Fire-Tested and Stronger Than Ever: The Resilience of New System Laundry ?? On an early Sunday morning in 1960, New System Laundry faced a five-alarm fire at our NE 10th Ave location in Portland—a blaze so intense it required two-thirds of the city’s fire apparatus and more than 100 brave firefighters. The fire destroyed our building and left a $900,000 path of destruction (about $9 million today). But if you know anything about New System, you know that even flames couldn’t keep us down.?? The newspaper article from that day details the fire’s devastation, noting that the cause started in the boiler room. One firefighter was injured, Captain John Merryman, who twisted his knee while battling the flames (thank you, Captain Merryman ??). But there was no pause, no “we’ll get back to you soon” message for our customers. It was business as usual, declared General Superintendent Kermit Riegelman—yes, in the middle of a disaster! Portland's laundry industry rallied around us, competitors offering facilities to ensure New System’s customers could still count on clean linens, uniforms, and more. Employees jumped into special night shifts at other locations to keep service uninterrupted. This story isn’t just about overcoming a physical fire; it’s a testament to the spirit that drives New System Laundry today. It’s about resilience, teamwork, and community support—principles that continue to guide us as we serve businesses across Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.
