Appalachian State University’s nonprofit electric utility serving the town of Boone since 1915.

关于我们

For nearly 110 years, Appalachian State University’s New River Light and Power (NRLP) — a nonprofit electric utility operated by the Division of Finance and Operations — has provided power to Western North Carolina residents. Today, NRLP serves nearly 8,500 residential and commercial customers who reside in and near the town of Boone. In January 2022, the utility will begin purchasing its electricity from Carolina Power Partners — a partnership that opens greater renewable energy opportunities. In partnership with Appalachian’s Office of Sustainability, Facilities Operations and Renewable Energy Initiative, NRLP has assisted with various energy efficiency projects across campus, including installing solar panels and providing funding for the Broyhill Wind Turbine located on Bodenheimer Drive. The utility holds the American Public Power Association’s highest Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) designation for providing reliable and safe electric service, and approximately $650,000 of its budget is reserved annually for contributions to Appalachian’s general scholarship fund.

  • Last week, NRLP was honored to participate in Girl Power NC, a program encouraging the next generation of women in the energy industry. Thanks to our friends at CCC&TI's Electrical Lineworker Institute, utilities and community partners spent a day demonstrating the innovation, dedication and benefits of a career in energy to young women from across the state. We're proud to help empower the next generation right here in Watauga County through the NRLP Lineworker Scholarship and the NRLP Scholarship for future Mountaineers. For more information on these educational opportunities, please visit https://lnkd.in/ej8Fqu8D.

  • New River Light and Power stands with all of Western North Carolina as we continue to deal with the effects of Hurricane Helene. The devastation is widespread and unimaginable. Our beautiful mountain hometown was not immune to the destruction but, we are moving forward, Boone Strong. Thanks to the heroic efforts of our linecrews, who battled outage after outage beginning in the predawn hours of Friday, Sep. 27, and to the tireless support of public power linecrews from Wilson Energy, Lexington Utilities and Washington Electric Utilities, power has been restored to over 99% of our service area. Boone continues to recover and the community has responded as we knew we would. Neighbor helping neighbor, stranger helping stranger. We are grateful to everyone who has dropped off or provided food and supplies, including Campus Dining, The Rock of Boone, and Mast General. Bocca Bistro has provided hot dinners to NRLP and visiting line teams and staff. The list goes on. To our customers, the best part of our public power community, we are grateful for you. Thank you for the outpouring of support. Please continue to stay safe. If you need us, our customer service is now back to normal operating hours of Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and can be contacted by phone at 828-264-3671, email at [email protected] or through our website at nrlp.appstate.edu. You may also leave us a voicemail or send us an email at any time. If you have been displaced and need to disconnect service, let us know by any contact method listed above. We are working closely with the Town of Boone to identify areas of concern or properties deemed unsafe.

They will respond as safely and quickly as possible. ??Outage information is posted on our website's homepage at nrlp.appstate.edu and on social media. ??Stay away from downed power lines. Never touch or attempt to move a power line. Assume it is electrified and call 911. Our lineworkers and staff stand ready to respond. Please stay safe out there!
