    Over the last year I’ve done over 400 mock interviews and career coaching sessions for salespeople. It’s my passion project, because of stories like the one below: I had a career coaching client jump into a 3-hour "simulation" interview recently and, oh boy, was it a ride. The company was testing for sales skill sets - but there was a catch. The evaluators didn’t have any of their own. It was a SaaS founder CEO, and their Ops person. Their 24 person company was looking for their first real sales hire. After 7 years they finally had the budget! But… it was clear that neither of them had any idea around the basic principles of sales. Yet they were the interviewers. And well, the interviewer is always right? Right? Turns out… they were the “show and tell” type. You know - the “how good is your deck” sellers. More marketing than sales, really. So anyway… Picture trying to judge a Michelin star restaurant without ever tasting fine dining. Yes friends - they were that kind of lost. The process? A maze. My client showed me the “simulation” exercise. It looked like they had plucked someone out of a Coachella festival. Pupils dilated. And asked them to write a 3-hour sales simulation. If you’re feeling low I’ll send it to you to get a good laugh. My client was pissed. Not just for the time wasted. But for not having the opportunity to really show what “great” looks like. The icing on the cake? They ghosted him for two weeks. After the two interviews and a 3-hour simulation. THE AUDACITY. Two follow-ups later, he finally got a response. They were “busy” apparently. And thought that was a perfectly good excuse. Safe to say - my advice here was to steer clear of this company. I asked him to imagine getting the role. Was the CEO someone he could even respect? Would he be judged fairly? Would they appreciate the decade worth of sales skills he’d bring them? So - we found him a different company. Two actually. That's why I coach. To navigate these tales. For all the unexpected acts. Whether in sales or in interviewing. And to teach this lesson: Your value isn't measured by someone else's blind spot. Find a company that can see your worth and then do everything you can to stick with them. #sales #interviewing #hollaatchaboi
