Supreme Court Chief Justice David K. Thomson experienced the workings of one of New Mexico’s busiest courts first-hand when he sat in with Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court Chief Judge Joshua J. Sánchez to hear custody arraignments and felony first appearance cases on Saturday. “We greatly appreciate Chief Justice Thomson taking the time to sit in on proceedings that our judges hear six days-a-week to protect constitutional rights and to keep our busy court dockets manageable,” shared Chief Judge Sánchez. “Last fiscal year alone, 7,358 felony cases were filed in the Metropolitan Court with case filings steadily increasing in recent years.” The visit was part of the Chief Justice’s efforts to meet with judges and employees at courts across the state. “Sitting in with local judges provides a fuller understanding of the work that our courts deal with each day,” said Chief Justice Thomson. “This helps in assessing the resources needed by courts and what the Judiciary can do to best serve the people of New Mexico.” In custody arraignments, the presiding judge makes a probable cause determination for defendants charged with misdemeanors and sets conditions of release. For first appearances for defendants charged with felonies, the judge advises the felony defendants of their rights, informs them of charged offenses, and sets conditions on their release while awaiting trial. The judge conducts all of the proceedings in person from a courtroom but the in-custody defendants appear remotely from the Metropolitan Detention Center. The Metropolitan Court has 19 judges: 14 in its Criminal Division, three in the Civil Division and two in the Felony Division. The court is staffed by more than 300 full-time employees. In the 2024 fiscal year, the court had a caseload of about 78,500 new, reactivated, and reopened cases. #nmcourts Full press release here: https://lnkd.in/gA8vVGgY Thank you to Metro's Public Information Officer Camille Baca for the pictures and KOB for the coverage - Behind the scenes at Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court - https://lnkd.in/d3ig_HFj

Did you know there is a Judicial Science School in New Mexico? Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Dr. Alessandro Cattaneo joined NM Supreme Court Chief Justice David K. Thomson and Court Education Institute Director Paula Couselo Findikoglu to present information about the week-long course at the 2024 National Association of State Judicial Educators' Conference in Arizona. The goal of the Los Alamos Judicial Science School, in session once a year, is to provide judges with knowledge and experience that will enhance their ability to evaluate whether scientific arguments meet the threshold requirements of admissibility in the courtroom. The immersion course is a unique combination of lectures from senior scientists and engineers, tours of specialized laboratory facilities, hands-on experience in a laboratory, and application of knowledge to a real-world legal problem. At the end of the course, judges have an opportunity to apply what they have learned during a mock hearing on the admissibility of scientific information. #nmcourts #NASJE #judicialscience #courtseducation

Today is Constitution Day! Constitution Day serves as an important reminder of the founding principles that shape the nation's governance and protect the freedoms we enjoy as citizens. Celebrated on September 17th, Constitution Day commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787, a historic moment when the framework for a democratic government was established. #nmcourts
