?? Today's the International Day of Democracy. What better time to re-evaluate, review and reflect on the state of democracy? ?? The United Nations anchors today's celebration within the framework that includes freedom of speech and links democracy and press freedom. As we consider the state of democracy, we must face the facts: democracy is at risk. ?? Calls to quell student protests on college campuses and the rise of fascism across declared democratic bodies are in direct opposition to the tenets of democracy. Additionally, the peaceful transfer of power is endemic to democratic practice, but alarming domestic and international conduct from the January 6 attacks to the refusal to appoint elected leadership in France and Venezuela showcase that democracy isn't always happening in practice. This year more than half the world is going through elections. We have to do better. ?? As we re-evaluate the state of democracy, we must also hold ourselves accountable to practicing and protecting democracy in our own lives. ??? We as a people must collectively commit to democracy both in practice and as a goal and hold our leadership bodies accountable. ?? We need to move money to communities, innovators and entrepreneurs who are living out democratic values beyond the ballot. ??? We have to do our part. ? How will you show up for democracy today?

?Anyone else still electrified by the DNC? ??? NMV President Carlissia N. Graham and NMV Partner Phillip Sanders were on the ground in Chicago, and these were their Top 5 DNC Moments: 1. Michelle Obama: Reigniting the message of hope from President Barack Obama's campaign, the former First Lady urged citizens to vote in order to "turn our country away from the fear, division, and smallness of the past," while also highlighting that the presidency "might just be one of those Black jobs," in reference to Trump's previous claims that immigrants were "taking Black jobs." 2. Exonerated Five: The Exonerated Five's presence at the DNC was no coincidence: Trump famously took out a full-page ad in the NYTimes calling for the execution of the Exonerated Five when they were innocent five teenagers. Now men, Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, Korey Wise and Yusef Salaam endorsed Kamala Harris for President, emphasizing that Trump still believes they're guilty even after scientific evidence proved otherwise, a cautionary tale for the future of the nation. 3. Jessie Jackson: In a moving gesture to give him his flowers, so to speak, the 82-year-old civil rights activist and founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition Jessie Jackson received a standing ovation from the ~23,500 people in attendance at Chicago's United Center. 4. Uncommitted members of the delegation using their right to free speech: Uncommitted delegates launched a Sit-In after the DNC rejected their request for a Palestinian speaker. Georgia state lawmaker Ruwa Romma read the proposed speech to reporters outside the convention center. 5. Hillary Clinton: The 2016 Democratic Presidential Nominee Hillary Clinton's energetic speech drew parallels from her campaign against Trump to Kamala Harris's, reminding voters that they're voting between a unifying body and one set on fracturing Americans and America as we know it. ??? The DNC energized the NMV team to continue our focused investments in organizations working to protect our democracy. After last week's events, we're thrilled to get back to it.
