I was very pleased?when?New Light Technologies (NLT)?founder and CEO, Ghermay A. Araya asked me to join NLT as a Senior Geospatial Consultant. I've worked with Ghermay and NLT for decades starting when I was a private sector GIS consultant with Michael Baker Jr. Inc. and continuing through my time as Chief Data Officer and Interim Chief Technology Officer of the District of Columbia. The District has a proud tradition of nurturing disadvantaged small local businesses and those incentives certainly had a role in bringing NLT to my attention and encouraged Ghermay and I to form collaborative partnerships. Small DC based IT firms typically?face at least two big hurdles to?cross. Many such firms start as "body shops," simply recruiting and supplying talent. That talent?is contracted to?DC government agencies like the Office of Chief Technology Officer. It isn't easy to grow from supplying?people managed?by others to supplying teams that?holistically?deliver projects. NLT started that way, with only Ghermay's own body in the shop, but NLT long ago jumped that hurdle and began delivering complete geospatial?projects?including application?development,?systems integration, data?development and data governance.? It can also be difficult for small DC based firms to grow beyond supporting the DC government. NLT has also done that and now has federal, regional, and academic?clients in addition to maintaining a healthy book of work with the District. Over the years NLT staff and I collaborated on innovative?projects including DC's Master Address Repository, The DC Atlas, emergency management situational awareness, Citizen Atlas, and data curation. It is reinvigorating for me now to be able to support the talented and growing team at NLT. If you are already an NLT client or thinking about becoming one, I'm looking forward to working with you. Please don't hesitate to reach out.
