For more than 100 years, YMCAs in New Jersey have been leaders in swim safety and instruction for all ages. The YMCAs are among the largest providers of swim instruction and safety programs, offering both quality, affordable, and accessible programs across the state. Collectively, the YMCAs teach swim lessons to 32,000 individuals annually in 84 pools and certify 2,200 lifeguards each year. The YMCAs' infrastructure and expertise uniquely position them to provide statewide swim safety instruction to all ages and economic levels. The YMCA has a long history of promoting water safety. The YMCA introduced the concept of group swim lessons in 1909 and has continued to innovate and expand its programs ever since. The “Safety Around Water” program focuses on reaching children and families, particularly in underserved communities, to teach basic water safety skills and reduce the risk of drowning.
