  • Last week, the NJDOH released an informational update for veterinarians on H5N1 in Cats Key Points or Updates: ?? The first feline cases of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in New Jersey were confirmed in February 2025. All confirmed feline cases in NJ to date are associated with one property- no additional cases outside of this cluster have been identified. ?? While the risk from cats to people is considered low, veterinarians should take steps to prepare so that suspect H5N1 feline cases can be safely evaluated in their veterinary clinics and reduce potential risk of exposures to veterinary staff or other animals. ?? Veterinarians should also consider other differential diagnoses when evaluating cats and perform other diagnostic testing if indicated. ?? There have not been any cases of humans becoming infected with H5N1 from contact with infected cats during this outbreak in the United States. • Dr. Barry M. Adler, 74, of Lincroft passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. A celebration of Barry's life will take place on Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 2pm to 5pm at GERITY & CHUBENKO FUNERAL HOME, 411 Amboy Avenue, Woodbridge, NJ 07095. As NJVMA president, he established member roundtables, providing members an opportunity to discuss topics of import with NJVMA leadership, resulting in the development of a policy that was aligned with members’ positions. While serving as chair of the NJVMA legislative committee, his astute understanding of complex legislative issues protected the profession from onerous legislative policy and promoted the profession’s value to the welfare of New Jerseyans and their animals. https://lnkd.in/gGA3hfu6
