The members of the #NewAmericanLeaders Elected Officials Network took on New York City for our first Electeds Site Visit (ESV)! ??Our ESVs are designed to allow for crucial in-person time with other?#NALpistas?to learn about current issues and policy solutions that impact New American communities. From visiting important sites like Ellis Island to connecting with our friends at National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) and New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) and hearing firsthand stories from the people supporting recent arrivals to New York City, we were reminded of the importance of advocating for and advancing immigrants and their rights. ? Thank you once again to our stellar lineup of speakers and panelists, CUNY History and Political Science Professor Dr. Samuel Finesurrey, Office of the New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, 2018 New American Hero Awards honoree Helen Gym, New York City Councilmember Alexa Aviles (Ready to Win? 2019), New York Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz (Ready to Lead? 2018), NICE's?Deputy Director Hildalyn Colon Hernandez (Ready to Win? 2019), and Diana Sanchez with NDLON!

I have always been very transparent about my status in the U.S. This is something I am not ashamed of, nor do I try to hide. I immigrated to the States back in 2005 and have been a DACA recipient since 2016. I am very proud of where I come from, as being an immigrant has never held me back. In fact, I was fueled by the belief that my immigrant identity serves as a catalyst for my personal growth and familial advancement. 2022 was a significant year for me. I acquired my first car, moved out independently before graduation, completed dual degrees in finance and business management. As much as I love my life in the States and the triumphs that have come along, the confines of DACA occasionally evoke a sense of confinement, akin to residing in a golden cage. A drawback of being a DACA recipient is that it does not grant you any legal status, nor does it allow you to travel outside US territory freely. You can only exit the country for humanitarian purposes, school, or work. This year, I came across a Study abroad program through my alma mater. Without hesitation, I seized the opportunity, embarking on a poignant journey back to my homeland for a profoundly impactful ten days. This trip was sponsored by a few organizations. To say I am blessed is an understatement. This trip allowed me to rekindle my connection with the vibrant tapestry of Mexican culture, history, and traditions by indulging in sumptuous culinary delights, exploring storied landmarks, participating on a panel IBERO Puebla, and reuniting with cherished family members. Though, I was fortunate enough to visit three of my grandparents, the harsh reality of loss loomed large, a reminder of the bittersweet nature of life’s journey. I paid homage at my grandfather’s gravesite, who passed away in 2020. He was a towering figure in shaping the person I am today, as he made the trip to the States with my sister and I back in 2005. This served as a reminder of the enduring bonds that transcend time and distance. I am immensely grateful to have lived this experience, as it played a profound role in healing emotional wounds that I may not fully realize were there. The lessons from this journey will continue to guide and inspire me, igniting a renewed sense of purpose and resilience on my path forward. Although I am uncertain of my return date, one thing remains clear… it won’t be another 19 years. With that being said, my trip to Mexico has come to an end… for now. I want to acknowledge the 29 other Dreamers who shared this journey with me, as well as to the remarkable individuals and organizations whose generosity and support made this experience possible. Your tireless commitment and unwavering dedication to our cause are deeply cherished and profoundly valued.
