关于我们
Our mission is to provide high-quality legal services to individuals, families and groups in the greater New Haven area, including the lower Naugatuck Valley, who are unable to obtain legal services because of limited income, age, disability, discrimination and other barriers. Our goals are: * To ensure equal access to justice. * To achieve long-lasting improvement in the rights and living conditions of our client community. * To foster our clients' ability to protect their own rights. We are an office of lawyers, paralegals and support staff. Our services are free of charge for those who are eligible. We provide a full range of legal services including full representation, advice, brief service, community education and policy advocacy.

Our immigration team, local immigration attorneys, and activists have been preparing for a potential second Trump administration. Maureen Abell, one of our immigration attorneys, spoke with the Yale Daily News regarding some of the challenges she faced during the first Trump administration, how to keep clients safe in an increasingly uncertain environment, and what immigration attorneys might expect from a second Trump administration. https://lnkd.in/evrJaj5U

Last week, Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal visited Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven to discuss their call for President Biden to take executive action on housing—a move that would deeply impact communities like ours in New Haven and statewide. For the families we serve, eviction, unaffordable living, poor housing conditions, and the like are not just legal issues; they disrupt lives. Decades of experience have shown us that real change happens through systemic policy reform. We’re grateful to our CT delegation for standing up for housing rights, but this is just the beginning. Let’s keep listening and working alongside our community to secure safe, decent, and affordable housing for all. #HousingJustice #AffordableHousing

Rachel Scotch is a Right to Counsel housing attorney at New Haven Legal Assistance (NHLAA), where she’s been advocating for tenants facing eviction for two years. A New Haven native, Rachel’s legal journey spans Gateway, Southern CT, Yale, and Northeastern. After 17 years as a public defender in Boston, she returned home to fight for housing justice. “Most people aren’t getting evicted because they don’t want to pay their rent, but because they can’t. The pay people are getting doesn’t match the rent increases,” says Rachel. Outside work, she enjoys hiking, kayaking, and baking — even winning the 2024 Big E Grand Champion title for her zucchini bread! #NHLAA #NHLAAStaffHighlight #NHLAATeam

We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of New Haven Alder, Tom Ficklin. Tom was a valued member of our community, having spent years advocating for the voiceless. As well as a friend to many at NHLAA, Tom did his field placement internship here at NHLAA when he attended Yale Divinity School. We are grateful to his service to our shared community. He will be missed.

Over the past 60 years, we've used a few different logos. Notably, we remember our first. This sign hung outside of NHLAA's first office in New Haven. Now, it hangs in our lobby as a reminder of our strong roots. Logos may change, but our mission has remained the same since we first opened our doors in 1964: expanding access to the justice system for those who have been historically excluded from it. #NHLAA60 #TBT
