Trauma-Informed Care and Co-occurring Disorders for Youth Presenter: Jordana Willers, Ed.M Tuesday, March 18, 2025 Live-Webinar / 9:30 - 3:30 Eastern $25.00 Registration Fee / 5 continuing education credits https://cvent.me/0kE3RB Substance use disorders are most often accompanied by a history of trauma and mental health challenges. How can we promote recovery in all areas, especially when engaging with and treating youth? This training focuses on understanding how co-occurring disorders develop over time and why they are so prevalent, particularly among young people who have experienced trauma. We will identify the most common mental health challenges for youth with substance use disorders, and complexities to be aware of. We will then lay the groundwork for understanding trauma and its impacts. With this foundation, we will highlight guiding principles for treating both co-occurring disorders and trauma within a youth development framework. We will then review best practices for screening, assessment, and engagement for youth with trauma and co-occurring disorders, along with evidence-based practices, alternative forms of treatment and recovery, peer supports, and family supports.

Stigma can exacerbate alcohol use disorder (AUD) by contributing to a person’s negative emotional states and deterring people from seeking treatment. Health care professionals and others can reduce stigma and encourage patients to seek treatment by conveying that AUD is a health condition with effective, evidence-backed treatments that can be delivered on an outpatient basis, preserving patient routines and privacy. Health care professionals can also focus on using non-stigmatizing language to reduce stigma. Learn more: https://go.nih.gov/fil2c2o.
