International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of women around the world, but also to reflect upon the barriers women continue to face in the fight for equity. This year, we want to highlight the work of Nancy Hopkins, Ph.D., a molecular biologist and advocate for equity in STEM. She conducted a famous study revealing discrimination against women at MIT in 1999, spurred by the denial of additional space for her zebrafish tanks. You can learn more about the fight for women in science in “The Exceptions” by Kate Zernike, and more about Nancy Hopkins in our blog post: https://lnkd.in/eeQHm5EB #InternationalWomensDay #WomensHistoryMonth

In collaboration with scientists at Institut Pasteur de Montevideo in Uruguay, NEB scientists developed a scalable method to build E. coli plasmid libraries from genomic and metagenomic DNA, utilizing simple techniques and common lab resources. This updated protocol expands the research community's ability to capture novel gene products from any DNA source. Read more in Current Protocols: https://lnkd.in/ecfRFnhm

Rare Disease Day is observed on the last day of February, as February 29 is the rarest day of the year. Aiming to raise awareness of rare disease and promote equity in diagnostic and therapeutic access and in life, it is a globally coordinated movement. This year, we would like to reflect on the work being done by Dr. Claudia Gonzaga-Jauregui, who studies rare disease. She is also part of ReMexER, an organization that, among other work, hosts a Rare Disease Day symposium. Check out a blog post we made last year about the insights she shared with NEB through a podcast and internal seminar: https://lnkd.in/ey7m36Ai
