关于我们
The New England Aquarium is a catalyst for global change through public engagement, commitment to marine animal conservation, leadership in education, innovative scientific research, and effective advocacy for vital and vibrant oceans. It is the only Boston-based cultural institution with a mission focused primarily on the environment, promoting the importance of protecting the blue planet through innovative exhibits and educational programs. These are some highlights of the Aquarium’s mission in action, on exhibit, and through our education, conservation, and research programs here on Central Wharf and around the globe. -The Trust Family Foundation Shark and Ray Touch Tank and the New Balance Foundation Marine Mammal Center showcase the diversity and importance of marine animals. -The Giant Ocean Tank inspires visitors with the beauty and complexity of marine habitat through replication of a Caribbean coral reef. -Aquarium educators lead a nationwide initiative on climate change and inspire future ocean protectors with hands-on programs such as Harbor Discoveries Camps and live blue? Ambassadors. -The Aquarium’s Marine Animal Rescue Team leads regional efforts to rehabilitate and release endangered species of sea turtles at our state-of-the-art Animal Care Center. -Aquarium scientists advise some of the nation’s largest seafood companies on methods to enhance the sustainability of commercial fisheries worldwide. -The Aquarium is home to the world’s longest-running right whale research program, coordinating efforts along the East Coast of the U.S. to restore the population of this endangered species. -The Aquarium collaborates with partners around the world to protect ocean ecosystems, such as coral reefs. In 2008, we partnered with the island nation of Kiribati and Conservation International to create the Phoenix Islands Protected Area. The Aquarium's Marine Conservation Action Fund (MCAF) is helping support vital humpback whale conservation efforts off the Pacific coast of Colombia. ?? Dr. Natalia Botero-Acosta, general director of the Macuáticos Colombia Foundation and MCAF project leader, has been leading efforts to monitor humpback whale health and behavior in the Gulf of Tribugá since 2013. Over the years, her team has used methods including photo ID, sound recordings, satellite tags, genetic samples, and citizen science reports from fishers and tourism operators. In 2023, the project reached a major milestone, recording 152 whale group encounters and collecting 198 tissue samples—nearly triple the sample size of previous years. This crucial data has directly influenced key conservation decisions, including the rejection of permit requests to build a deep-water port in the region, safeguarding the whales' habitat. As we approach Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we’re inspired by Dr. King’s vision of justice and equality, and we’re celebrating those who continue to work toward creating a more equitable world. In today's episode of WCVB’s CityLine, Karen Holmes Ward talks with the Aquarium's Chief of Conservation and Stewardship Dr. Letise LaFeir, PhD, about the critical work being done to promote climate justice and expand opportunities in STEM. The segment showcases the power of community, representation, and resilience. Letise shares her professional journey, and discusses how the New England Aquarium is creating opportunities through efforts like our community-focused outdoor exhibits, February’s Lowell Lecture with Black Girls Dive, and supporting communities affected by climate change. Together, we honor Dr. King’s legacy by striving for inclusivity, empowerment, and sustainable futures for all. Watch the segment: https://bit.ly/4hm2Ha7 #ClimateJustice #MinoritiesInStem #MLKJrDay

The formal withdrawal of the vessel speed rule is a serious setback for the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale. Vessel strikes are a leading cause of death and injury for North Atlantic right whales, and scientific research shows that we can protect them using speed restrictions. “Failing to implement stronger vessel strike protection measures puts these animals at further risk of extinction. To survive, right whales require immediate, decisive, and effective solutions to protect individuals from preventable deaths,” said Dr. Jessica Redfern, Associate Vice President of Ocean Conservation Science in the New England Aquarium’s Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life.
