Community-Based Sustainable Development
关于我们
New Ecology addresses global environmental issues by bringing the benefits of sustainable development to the community level with a concerted emphasis on equity. We make the built environment more efficient, healthy, and resilient by advancing sustainable practices, ensuring accessible, affordable, and healthy environments in which to live and work. As a nonprofit organization with 25 years of experience in affordable housing and sustainable developments, New Ecology advances programs that meet the needs of residents and communities while reducing carbon impacts. Our Green Building Services team advances the impact of sustainable development in new affordable multifamily housing by helping developers and their teams construct these residential or mixed-use buildings in a way that is healthy, affordable, resilient, and accessible to the communities they serve. Our Existing Building Decarbonization team transforms existing housing stock by working with owners and operators of multifamily affordable housing to pursue practical strategies for building decarbonization over time, reducing impacts and controlling costs while increasing sustainability. Our Climate Smart Communities program catalyzes local community development initiatives to deliver not only affordable housing and opportunities to build equity, but homes that offer improved indoor air quality and which are designed and built to withstand what we expect from our changing climate. We also have a Research and Development initiative that innovates and creates new opportunities for technologies, processes, and approaches that can make sustainable development in the built environment more efficient, cost-effective, and impactful. www.newecology.org

Last week, we hosted our first in-person Housing Sustainability Collaborative Convening in Washington, D.C. One thing was clear: despite uncertainty around federal #climateresources, the affordable housing and community development finance sectors are ready to deploy capital into energy-efficient, resilient housing projects nationwide. Our Pipeline Marketplace showcased GGRF-eligible projects from our member developers and energy lending capital products from our member CDFIs—demonstrating the momentum behind this work. As our CEO Robin Hughes put it: "HPN members have long recognized that making affordable housing more energy efficient, resilient, and healthier for our climate and communities is just good business." We are grateful to our Readiness Program supporters: JPMorganChase, Wells Fargo Foundation, Invest in Our Future, TD, and our event sponsors: Amalgamated Bank, Banyan Infrastructure, and SURE. Special thanks to our panelists, including coalition members from #GGRF’s NCIF awardees, Climate United (The Community Preservation Corporation) and Power Forward Communities (Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)), CCIA awardees Justice Climate Fund and Opportunity Finance Network, and SFA awardee GRID Alternatives and member panelists ACTION-Housing, Inc. Community Housing Capital, Inc., and National Housing Trust. Additionally, our multifamily consulting partners all Relay Network members including Elevate and New Ecology, Inc. and CDFI consulting teams from Community Sustainability Partners, Bright Power, Inc. Inc., Sustainable Capital Advisors, Forsyth Street shared insights, tools, and resources developed through the Readiness program. Stay tuned—we’ll be sharing key takeaways and resources on our Green & Healthy Communities Readiness page soon! #affordablehousing #communitydevelopment #Sustainability #GreenFinance

The Bennett Street project in Wilmington's Eastside neighborhood is a pilot initiative from New Ecology and Energize Delaware helping the Todmorden Foundation and Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County build 32 new, all-electric affordable housing units. The project directly supports the community's new revitalization plan, which prioritizes a wholistic approach to resident health and wellbeing. We recently visited the site with our partners to tour the progress of this exciting project. Built to high energy-efficiency standards (ENERGY STAR, DOE Zero Energy Ready Homes), the homes feature enhanced insulation, airtightness, high-performance windows, heat pump & ventilation with heat recovery. Preliminary HERS scores (35-37) suggest they will be among the city's most energy-efficient homes, significantly outperforming code-compliant properties and resulting in meaningful health and economic benefits for residents. The Bennett Street homes are a first of their kind for Delaware, but not the last; Energize Delaware has turned this pilot initiative into the statewide Climate Smart Homes Program!
