Community-Based Sustainable Development

关于我们

New Ecology addresses global environmental issues by bringing the benefits of sustainable development to the community level with a concerted emphasis on equity. We make the built environment more efficient, healthy, and resilient by advancing sustainable practices, ensuring accessible, affordable, and healthy environments in which to live and work. As a nonprofit organization with 25 years of experience in affordable housing and sustainable developments, New Ecology advances programs that meet the needs of residents and communities while reducing carbon impacts. Our Green Building Services team advances the impact of sustainable development in new affordable multifamily housing by helping developers and their teams construct these residential or mixed-use buildings in a way that is healthy, affordable, resilient, and accessible to the communities they serve. Our Existing Building Decarbonization team transforms existing housing stock by working with owners and operators of multifamily affordable housing to pursue practical strategies for building decarbonization over time, reducing impacts and controlling costs while increasing sustainability. Our Climate Smart Communities program catalyzes local community development initiatives to deliver not only affordable housing and opportunities to build equity, but homes that offer improved indoor air quality and which are designed and built to withstand what we expect from our changing climate. We also have a Research and Development initiative that innovates and creates new opportunities for technologies, processes, and approaches that can make sustainable development in the built environment more efficient, cost-effective, and impactful. www.newecology.org

New Ecology recently participated in the Delaware Foundation for Mathematics and Science Education’s “STEM Equity in Action Day,” welcoming guests from various public schools in New Castle County. We spent the afternoon learning about affordable housing and building science, then finished up with a site visit to a new construction project to see some of the principles and practices at work.

How important is insulation? It's something that we tend to think about when the weather gets colder, but many don't give it a second thought the rest of the year. As the climate changes and we begin to experience more severe weather events, how will your insulation (or lack thereof) help or hurt you? In the latest episode of Bonus Banter by BuildingWell, hosts Michelle Moran and Alina Michelewicz discuss this and more. The new Bonus episode is out NOW! Listen today on your favorite podcast player or at https://lnkd.in/eYenVgUZ What do you think Michelle and Alina should talk about next? Let us know in the comments!

We are proud to announce that Glen Brook Way Phase 2, Buildings D & E are officially Phius Design Certified! Earning this certification means this project is designed and tested to perform well above and beyond other buildings when it comes to comfort, efficiency, resilience and safety. Projects certified to Phius’ climate-specific, cost-optimized standard are proven to use 40-60 percent less energy and provide a comfortable living environment. Thank you to the project team:?Metro West Collaborative Development, Dellbrook | JKS, , GGD Consulting Engineers, Inc.

A few weeks ago, Project Manager Michelle Margolies attended the groundbreaking of the 41 LaGrange Street project in Boston, for which New Ecology will serve as the Sustainability Consultant. 41 LaGrange is owned and developed by Planning Office for Urban Affairs (POUA) and St. Francis House. The development is planned to be a 19-story, 126 unit building which will provide 70 units of permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless households. Located in the Chinatown neighborhood of Boston, LaGrange is close to downtown and the nearby Boston Public Garden.

A few weeks ago, members of our Mid Atlantic teams gathered for a summer outing! ?? We visited the beautiful Longwood Gardens in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Everyone enjoyed the gorgeous weather while strolling around the gardens. Our team also really enjoyed looking around the pump house (you can take the team away from NEI, but you can't take the NEI out of the team)!

This was such an interesting conversation that stuck with me long after it was over. How can we plan for buildings today that will last and perform well in the future, without knowing what the future will hold? Thank you to Ching Wen Hsiao and Paul Eddowes for being our guests on this episode, and to Alina Michelewicz for leading this conversation!

A new episode of the BuildingWell podcast is OUT NOW! For many, predicting the future seems like a task reserved for prophets and clairvoyants. It’s no wonder, then, that energy modelers, lacking such all-seeing abilities, struggle to forecast a building’s future performance. Join hosts Alina Michelewicz and Michelle Moran as they engage in a conversation with Senior Energy Modeler Ching Wen Hsiao and Paul Eddowes, Director of Green Building Services. They’ll delve into the challenges, limitations, and thought processes involved in building energy modeling, covering topics such as: Which buildings are best prepared for catastrophic weather events? Is Boston the new Memphis? Will we have to remove insulation as the climate changes? Find out all of this and more on the newest episode of BuildingWell! Listen and follow BuildingWell TODAY! https://lnkd.in/efmHY6su Available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, Amazon Podcasts, Audacity, Pandora, and more!
