关于我们
New Detroit is a coalition of 57 nonprofit, corporate, and civic leaders working to achieve racial understanding and racial equity in Metropolitan Detroit. We were formed in response to civil unrest in 1967 at the request of then Michigan Governor George Romney, Detroit Mayor Jerome Cavanagh, and business executive Joseph L. Hudson, Jr. to identify what went wrong, what needed to change, and how to make that change happen. New Detroit’s work is organized around three pillars: thought leadership, policy advocacy, and collective action.

New Detroit's Director of Transformational Change, Rebecca Irby talks about sound, water, and reflection as a path to racial healing In a world where discussions around race and equity are often cerebral and discussion-heavy, innovative approaches can create more emotive and reflective experiences. At a recent race equity conference, a unique session aimed to challenge traditional perceptions called participants to engage mindfully through the use of sound, water, and reflection. Racism is a historical way of thinking that must be eradicated. At today’s conference, the focus shifted from intellectual exercises to more experiential engagement. Participants were encouraged to feel, move, and internalize the themes closer to their hearts, through methods not typical at such events. Sound, Water, and Reflection: A Path to Racial Healing. The shift from a predominantly cerebral conference environment to one that embraces emotional and sensory engagement can lead to profound moments of personal insight and release. Rebecca’s innovative session demonstrated how incorporating sound and water not only challenged the participants' approach to discussing race but also provided an essential space for personal transformation. By harnessing the elemental connection between sound, water, and self-awareness, individuals experienced a cathartic and reflective release, nudging them closer to the dissolution of outdated biases.
