Today, we honor Juneteenth, a pivotal day in American history. On June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, TX, to announce the end of slavery, bringing the news of the Emancipation Proclamation to over 100,000 enslaved people for the first time. This significant day, known as Juneteenth, marks the liberation of more than three million enslaved individuals, declaring their freedom and making slavery illegal. In the following years, June 19th became a day of celebration and remembrance across Texas and the nation. Communities gathered to commemorate this victory, recognizing the resilience and strength of those who fought for freedom. In June 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate passed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, establishing it as an official federal holiday.
