    Revenue planning is part art, part science. At INBOUND, I had the opportunity to share a playbook that incorporates my experience from building countless revenue plans as a CMO and CRO in VC, PE, and self-funded environments. Here are some key elements I include in my approach to annual revenue planning: ?? Create strategic planning principles to guide your decision-making. Pro tip: align them with your company values. ?? Treat planning like any major initiative: curate your team, hold a kick-off call, and align on timelines. ? Establish alignment on your go-to-market model, as it will impact the metrics and assumptions of your plan. ?? Use your own benchmarks and historical reporting to identify key assumptions. ? When modeling, avoid over-indexing on new business. Consider the entire customer lifecycle to build a revenue plan anchored on Net Revenue Retention, balanced by new business growth. ?? Use the mathematical model to drive strategic initiatives. Every cell in your revenue model should correspond to an initiative that maximizes the chance of hitting that assumption. ?? Communicate, communicate, communicate. Transparent and consistent communication is key to aligning your organization around the revenue plan. I'm going to dig into each of these tips next week.
