“In Phnom Penh, we hosted a social event at Boston Pizza and a resource fair at Tiny Toones.* These events offered profound insights into the lives of deported community members who have rebuilt their futures in Cambodia. “Our resource fair celebrated community strength through panel discussions, legal support, and an American cookout. The multigenerational gathering connected returnees, their families, and Tiny Toones youth through targeted workshops and activities, creating spaces of support and belonging. Despite the geographic separation, their American identities remain intact as they build lives as teachers, entrepreneurs, and parents. While many long to visit aging parents in the U.S., their resilience, community bonds, and unwavering spirit continue to inspire, teaching us profound lessons about humanity and healing. Their stories can teach many about community, humanity, and healing, and we felt honored to hear them and share space with them.” Reflections from John Lam & Berm San Diego from APSC. Huge thanks to Boston Pizza & Bar, Tiny Toones Cambodia, the Seattle Clemency Project and Khmer Anti-Deportation Advocacy Group (KhAAG) for partnering with us to make the events a success. *Tiny Toones, founded by KK, empowers youth through hip-hop education and creative outlets. Kites to Southeast Asia (SEA) is a coalition between Asian Prisoner Support Committee - APSC, Center for Empowering Refugees and Immigrants - CERI, MN8, New Light Wellness, and New Breath Foundation. On our journey to collective healing, Kites to SEA aims to learn about the deported community members' needs, listen to their wisdom, and strengthen our solidarity. #kitestoSEA #hope #healing #keepingfamiliestogether

This is what it looks like to work in relationship with the communities you support. New Breath Foundation continues to engage with those impacted by this country's criminal justice and immigration system so that we can do better. Proud to be a board member. #nonprofit #philanthropy #community #relationship #refugee #AANHPI
2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the end of U.S. wars in Southeast Asia, the beginning of the Khmer Rouge genocide, and the largest refugee resettlement program in the U.S. For 10 days, several members from Kites to SEA, a coalition between Asian Prisoner Support Committee (APSC), Center for Empowering Refugees and Immigrants (CERI), New Light Wellness, and NBF, are traveling to Phnom Penh, Battambang, and Siem Reap in Cambodia, to host social events, resource fairs, and listening sessions for communities impacted by deportation – folks who were the youngest war survivors. Follow along with us as we post reflections throughout our trip. *Kites to Southeast Asia (SEA) is a coalition between Asian Prisoner Support Committee (APSC), Center for Empowering Refugees and Immigrants (CERI), Minnesota8, New Light Wellness, and New Breath Foundation. I had a chance to share space with two of the influential leaders of Ohana Ho'opakele while NBF was on a learning tour with our partners, the Hawai'i People's Fund and the Gerbode Foundation. The continental US has much to learn about healing and repairing harm.
Fact: Kanaka Maoli, or Native Hawaiians, are overrepresented in state prisons. They compose 10% of the population of Hawai’i but over 40% of incarcerated persons there. (Source: Prison Policy Initiative) Join us in welcoming another NBF ???? ?????? ???? Fund Grantee working on this very issue: Ohana Ho’opakele! Founded in 1999 by kūpuna, local elders, they combat the disproportionate incarceration of Kānaka Maoli in Hawai’i’s prisons. They aim to restore balance in our families and communities through healing practices, preventative programming, and advocating for rehabilitative measures. Find out more about our newest grantee partner at www.ohanahoopakele.org. Created by New Breath Foundation in 2021, the ???? ?????? ???? Fund supports AANHPI organizations to fight scapegoating, cultivate healing, promote cross-racial solidarity, and protect communities from state violence. #wegotus #happynewbreath #philanthropymatters #grantee #AANHPI #foundation #ohana #hawaii #hawaiirising

Read our latest blog to hear reflections from Maya Iwata, NBF’s Director of Strategic Partnerships, on centering Native Hawaiians’ lived experiences in community approaches and prioritizing holistic healing over punishment to truly change lives. A forthcoming report will outline disproportionate incarceration rates, practices that are working to reduce over punishment for youth, and what opportunities exist for further transformative change. New Breath Foundation is committed to finding new solutions with groups dedicated to cross-racial and cross-cultural solidarity. We’re proud of connections we’ve made like this with the support from?the Gerbode Foundation and the help of ???? ?????? ???? Fund grantee partner Hawaii Peoples Fund (HPF). As we continue building relationships on the ground and creating tools for conversations that drive resources to these communities, we hope you stay connected to the movement. Huckleberry Youth Programs is thrilled to announce the keynote speaker for our 2nd Annual Hearts in Harmony Benefit on Thurs. April 24 at Presidio Officers' Club. ? Eddy Zheng of the New Breath Foundation ? Eddy's powerful journey from incarceration to becoming a transformative leader for social justice and healing is an inspiration. Eddy established New Breath Foundation not only to offer hope of new beginnings to AANHPIs but also to unite with Black, Latine, and Indigenous grassroots organizers to work together toward a collective vision of true healing and racial justice. Eddy's work with the New Breath Foundation continues to create lasting change for those impacted by incarceration. His work aligns with the justice work that Huckleberry Youth Programs has done over the last 25 years through the Community Assessment & Referral Center (CARC). Gina M. Fromer, PhD, and I were reflecting a couple of days ago on how we came together during the 2010 moment of anti-Black and anti-Asian tension by uplifting commonalities between the African American and Asian American communities. With the leadership of Juliana Choy Sommer and Sarah Wan, we started the tradition of celebrating Black History Month and the Lunar New Year. Fifteen years later, we continue to apply the antidote to systemic racism through cross-cultural engagement, building relationships, nurturing trust, and investing in racial solidarity. It's been my honor and privilege to work with folks at Bayview Hunters Point YMCA and Community Youth Center of San Francisco (CYC) and Rev. Norman Fong, who shared the same values. #wegotus #wehere #racialsolidarity #goodnews #happynewbreath
"Life is not what you alone make it. Life is the input of everyone who touched your life and every experience that entered it. We are all part of one another.” - Yuri Kochiyama We celebrated the 15th annual Lunar New Year and Black History Month joint celebration organized by Bayview YMCA and Community Youth Center of San Francisco this month. Since NBF first started, we've been a proud sponsor of this event in Bayview Hunters Point and have kept our tradition of bringing Asian and Black communities together to appreciate our cultures, history, and identities! Each year, we hold this event with the understanding that our oppressions are indeed linked - but we are connected in much more than what we’ve overcome. Racial solidarity is the only way we can hope to achieve collective liberation and events like this aid in strengthening the trust and respect we have with each other. At NBF, we’re committed to building strong relationships between AAHNPI communities and organizations like our partners Bayview Hunters Point YMCA and Community Youth Center of San Francisco (CYC) to continue deepening these ties. It is only when we truly come together in consistent unity, that we will have a chance at experiencing the freedoms we all deserve. ??
