We are so proud of 2023 New Blue Fellow Det. Kerry Burke and her capstone solution, the Community Advocacy & Resource Enhancement (CARE). "Zebulon (NC) had seen a 106% increase in children committing crimes and a 45% increase in children who were witnesses to or victims of a crime or trauma from 2013 to 2022, according to New Blue’s website. As part of the program’s Class of 2023, Burke hoped to change that by promoting trauma-informed policing for children and their families." Read more at: https://lnkd.in/eWJ9gyYa
关于我们
Who We Are New Blue is a nationwide nonprofit fellowship program that equips police leaders with the tools to reform problematic policies and practices and improve police-community relations in BIPOC communities, where trust in police has disintegrated. We are committed to repairing the broken relationship between police and their communities, and know that our common goals of improving public safety, increasing community engagement, and building a more equitable system are essential in earning back community trust. What We Do New Blue is working to Develop 100 Transformative Officers and Solutions by 2025. First, we identify officers whose identities and/or experiences are representative of the community they serve and who have a deep understanding of community context. We look for those who have demonstrated a desire to reimagine law enforcement and are dedicated to the pursuit of social equity and racial justice. Then we provide Fellows with the networks, funding, and skills to develop long-term solutions in policing. These officers take part in a year long fellowship where they gain expertise in (1) Problem Identification- defining a problem in police procedure or practice that directly harms the community, (2) Co-production- working with the community to develop a systemic solution (3) Impact Measurement- analyzing, amplifying, and ensuring longevity of the solution. Last, New Blue supports a network of fellowship alumni who share their solutions within our database. Network connections allow agencies to adopt and scale the most promising solutions in pursuit of increasing police legitimacy and community trust.

NYPD Chief of Department - Retired; Director of Outreach and Engagement, Policing Leadership Academy
Clearly, mistakes were made in PA that allowed a would be assassin to shoot former President Trump, and murder and wound others. What isn’t clear right now is what those mistakes were, and who, if anyone is at fault. Yes, it’s obvious to everyone that the roof should have been covered, why it wasn’t, we don’t know. Was it incompetence? Negligence? Lack of resources or something more sinister? We will only find out the answers after a full, thorough, transparent, and fair investigation. Is the Director responsible? Maybe, in so far as she is in charge of the agency. That’s a reality that every police chief in America recognizes, that when something goes wrong on your watch, you’re going to take the blame, regardless of your actual culpability. Attacking her as a DEI hire while ignoring her 27 years of distinguished service to the USSS is just plain wrong. In critical incidents, we expect the “arm chair warriors” and self proclaimed experts to pontificate on what would’ve / should’ve / could’ve been done differently. They have no actual experience or expertise in the matter, but they’ve watched “In The Line Of Fire” a few times, so they feel qualified. Those who have actual significant experience in executive protection and all it entails at that level should know better than to weigh in without all the facts. I have worked countless events alongside the women and men of the USSS and other federal agencies. To a woman or man, they are brave, dedicated and exceptional at what they do. They are also human. We train to prepare for days we hope never come, and yet sometimes do. All the training in the world cannot predict how someone will respond on the day that the bell rings. Fight / flight / freeze is a physiological reaction. I have personally witnessed male officers built like linebackers freeze like a deer in the headlights when it hit the fan, I also saw several run from the danger, or not show up at all. Since this was the first time in more than 40 years that someone has managed to shoot at a current or former president, it’s fair to say that none of the agents or officers there had ever actually experienced it outside of a training facility. What isn’t far is to blame it on gender, race, or anything other than individual actions. It’s very easy to sit on your couch, or in the safety of a conference room, with a 360 degree view of 20x20 hindsight and point out what you perceive as deficiencies. It’s not quite as easy when shots ring out and chaos erupts. Even when perfectly executed, the work never looks pretty. The United States Secret Service does a thankless job, under unimaginably difficult conditions. I remain grateful for the women and men brave enough to actually suit up and do it. May God bless them, and Saint Michael continue to watch over them.

To any young girl considering a career of service, know that the rhetoric against women is neither acceptable nor the norm. America needs you, and the organizations at the top of this letter are here to support you from academy to retirement. We stand with the U.S. Secret Service, Director Cheatle, and all the women serving in law enforcement. The evidence is clear: we need more women in uniform to make our communities safer and more just. Thank you to our partners at 30x30 Initiative and Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP) for inviting Brittany Nestor, Kristin Daley and I to sign this letter on behalf of New Blue. #future #careers #police

UWPD Sergeants Jake Lepper and Meg Hamilton were in Chicago last week for the kickoff to the New Blue Fellowship. We're so proud of their involvement with this great program! Sgt Lepper is participating in the third cohort of this national program, which gives police officers the opportunity to develop and launch innovative projects in the communities they serve. Sgt Hamilton, an alum of the program’s first cohort, delivered the keynote address. . Learn more about the New Blue Fellowship here ? https://newblue.org

“Leaders, let your thinkers and workers do their thing. Get out of the way and let them work their magic. Policing is changing. The world is changing.” Cohort 1 alum, Enjoli Daley, with some words of wisdom!
Storytime… So it's about 5:30 in the afternoon yesterday and I'm sitting in my back yard, chillin on Juneteenth reflecting on the previous 24 hours. Yesterday was also my daughter's 6th birthday. Little Miss Juneteenth wanted to go to the pool. So we went. As I watched her splash and play with friends I couldn't help but smile at the pure joy she exhibited. Freedom personified. Rewind to Tuesday afternoon where myself and two of my colleagues presented a concept we created to a room full of people at New Blue's Conference in downtown Chicago. Standing along side my colleagues, two Black Women who were not only but police officers, but also my friends as we presented the CAIR Card was a surreal and proud moment. We were our ancestors wildest dreams. Despite a slight sideshow issue, I think we did a rock star job. As we often do. Sergeant Tosha Wilson and Detective Amanda Wright have been holding it down for a long time, doing incredible work in their careers and in their community. I'm honored to work alongside and co-create with them. I'm thankful to New Blue, Brittany Nestor and Andy Saunders, MPA for creating space for forward thinking law enforcement professionals committed towards meaningful change and positive impact. Y’all did it for real. Leaders, let your thinkers and workers do their thing. Get out of the way and let them work their magic. Policing is changing. The world is changing. Community focused, restorative practices must be implemented. Creative minds are absolutely needed at the table. Point of this post: ? Change must happen. No way around it. Accept and make space. Change is why my daughter joyfully experiences her birthright of freedom. ? Look around the room. If the people in the room never have an original thought or idea, your room is stale. Invite different people. Shout out to our fellow Cohort 1 Alum, Meg Hamilton who is an absolute force in the change maker game, and a top notch presenter! Cohort 3....y'all got this! Victoria Miner, M.S.C.J I’m looking directly at you! #NewBlue #Creativethinkers #Changemakers #NewBlueAlum #Cohort1 #reformfromwithin #lawenforcementprofessional #CairCard #makespace

While serving as a member of the Mayor's Public Safety Transition Subcommittee, one of my priority recommendations was to invest in the leadership development of police officers and supervisors. It was exciting to spend time with the current New Blue cohort this week that includes 5 members of CPD. Superintendent Snelling gave the welcome address to newest class made up of law enforcement professionals from across the country. I had the honor of instructing the first session. Congratulations to Brittany Nestor, Andy Saunders, MPA, and Kristin Daley on the successful launch of the third cohort! ?? CPD social media team

What a way to close out #WomensHistoryMonth! New Blue and our outstanding partners 30x30 Initiative are this week's online feature for Police Chief Magazine's Women in Policing issue. “Building a broad network of police leaders—of all ranks—and helping them solidify connections with each other is the foundation of New Blue. There are good police out there with amazing ideas for their departments and communities, but it’s not always easy to be the person pushing for change. These officers who are creating and implementing these revolutionary solutions are the ones informing ?New Blue’s work every day.” https://lnkd.in/gMPBPMdX Kenneth Corey, Andy Saunders, MPA, Brittany Nestor, Kristin Daley
