The Lieutenant Governor's Office of Small Business Advocacy and Director Sarah Johnson were proud to support Senate Bill 92 during the 2023 legislative session. This bill, championed by Senator Fabian Donate, established requirements for the regulation of sidewalk vendors by local governments. We remain committed to reducing barriers for Nevada's small businesses and believe Senator Donate's bill this session, SB 295, will continue this effort! #nvleg

OSBA director Sarah Reeves Johnson recently talked to the #NVleg about how onerous licensing laws disproportionately impact minority, immigrant, and first-generation communities in Nevada. Long delays in getting licensed and sky-high application fees put good-paying jobs just out of reach for those trying to build a better future. State-level licensing is to blame for fewer jobs, higher consumer costs, less competition, increased income inequality, and less social and economic mobility. For lower-income Nevadans, state occupational licensing laws make finding work or opening a small business harder and more expensive, if not outright impossible. Nevada is the most occupationally licensed state in the country—meaning more people here have to ask the government’s permission just to go to work. From barbers to contractors to home bakers, excessive red tape blocks economic opportunity and keeps hardworking Nevadans from earning a living.
