When we talk about unemployment, the broad definition is people who are (1) looking for work (2) able and available to work, and (3) have looked for work in the last 4 weeks. This means that the reason for unemployment is not in itself a part of this definition, but the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics helpfully puts together "Alternative Measures of Labor Underutilization" that modify this definition. Some are more restrictive - only counting people who lost their job, or have been unemployed 15 weeks or more. Others are more loose, including people who haven't looked in the last 4 weeks or who are even currently working part time but want full time work. I like comparing these different measures to the core measure to look at the difference - compare people unemployed due to job loss and all people who are unemployed, and you can also see people unemployed *not* due to job loss. This matters because not all unemployment is the same - unemployment driven by job loss is the thing you see move in a recession, while rising unemployment for other reasons heralds the onset of recovery as people on the sideline start looking for work again. Plotting both measures on a chart, you can see a counter-clockwise movement through the business cycle, with current levels of unemployment in the lower-left "normal" corner. Want more?
