How do you think Nevada is doing ?
Creating a globally competitive screen sector requires more than just incentives and workforce development—it also depends on a film-friendly production environment. Film commissions play a pivotal role in this by acting as the bridge between public services, production companies, and local communities, ensuring smooth collaboration and logistical ease for productions. In the chapter "Best Practice in Creating a Film-Friendly Production Environment," the Best Practice in Screen Sector Development report by Olsberg?SPI in partnership with AFCI emphasizes the key elements that make a location film-friendly: - Simplicity: Efficient logistical processes, like permits and communication, are essential. - Ease of Movement: Productions should have a smooth process for importing international talent and equipment, with minimal customs or visa delays. - Access and Understanding: Key decision-makers should understand the needs of film productions and work together to support them. - Responsiveness: Quick turnaround times on permits or other requests are critical to avoid production delays. The report looks into successful case studies, including Screen Auckland in New Zealand, which has become a global film-friendly hub through clear processes, streamlined permitting, and partnerships with local communities. Similarly, Wesgro in the Western Cape, South Africa, has enhanced the region’s reputation by fostering relationships with international productions and creating seamless logistical support. This chapter is a must-read for anyone looking to create or improve a film-friendly jurisdiction. ?? Last month, Film Office Director Kim Spurgeon, participated in a webinar hosted by Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA) which highlights strategies for maximizing time at the American Film Market (AFM), focusing on the importance of networking and working with film commissions. It emphasizes our role in supporting AFM by providing local resources, finding interns, and offering logistical support.
