Much of what we call mental health involves recognizing what builds, maintains, renews, and taxes our vigor — and making choices accordingly. Understand that much of what happens around you, both online and in real life, involves people attempting to create feelings within you to tax your vigor. Don’t let 'em.

Long post alert! Read if this punchline is interesting: ?It is common for high performers to be addicted to high physiological states and use performance as a coping mechanism. However this strategy is not effective in the long term, as it leads to burnout, a common occurrence in the high performance world. NeuroSmart can tell you if your high performer is using adrenaline as a coping mechanisms and is at risk for burnout or self-regulating effectively. Breathwork, visualization, meditation and other techniques are becoming increasingly popular. They are effective but their effects on the nervous system are very individualized. If I put Neurosmart on 10 police officers and have them practice the Cyclic Sigh, I get 10 different responses because it all depends on where the person is starting from. Are they having a rough day? Is this after a good night’s sleep? This is where Neurosmart comes in. It gives an objective measure to the the coach, the therapist and the player on the impact of the intervention on the nervous system and helps them find the right intervention to get into their optimal performance zone. This is also why we LOVE partnering with coaches and therapists because I believe coaching with data?is larger than the sum of impact coaching and data alone. A beautiful demonstration of this came from our partnership with SPIRE Academy Mental Performance Division that is using NeuroSmart in training their E Sports athletes. See below for snapshots from 2 recordings done during the exact same mental training exercise. Players were instructed to go through a breath focused meditation exercise followed by a performance visualization exercise and end with another meditation. The responses could not have been more different! While player A showed the intended relaxation followed by activation and another of relaxation, player B was the complete opposite. This player was activated by the meditative exercise and was only able to stabilize during the visualization practice. Interestingly we learned that player B was their top performer yet was exhibiting signs of burnout. Neurosmart data clearly shows the player was stressed to begin with and the intended relaxation was not working. This is common with high performers who use sports or other adrenaline triggering activities as a coping mechanisms. Their high performance often masks this phenomenon eventually leading to burnout and unexplained performance loss. Neurosmart unmasks what is real coping vs unhealthy coping, helping players gain real coping skills, enhance their performance and extend their careers. We are incredibly excited for Neurosmart’s application to E-sports. (I have to admit I had not heard of Valorant before!) and our partnership with Spire Academy. We cannot wait to witness the improvement in these young athletes' performance and mental health! #esports #valeront #burnout #mentalperformance.

Do you use a simulator for training but have no idea how much stress your scenarios are inducing and how your officers are regulating stress? Emotional regulation is a core skill needed effective policing. Neurosmart provides the officers and the trainers the objective feedback needed to identify triggers and address them in the safety of training before they lead to critical errors on the street. Combining the convenience of simulator technology with immediate biofeedback will enhance the integration of tactical skills with emotional skills leading to better decision making. Without objective data, there is no way to measure emotional regulation and then training becomes similar to going on a diet without a scale. At the IACP we had the opportunity to demo NeuroSmart with multiple simulator companies and got very interesting results even in a few trials. Special thanks to MILO for demoing with us. Some takeaways: -Just because you know the scenario doesn't mean you are regulating well. -Unexpected weapon problems are a huge trigger that officers need to train to deal with. Otherwise they will be in the red zone for the remainder of the call. - We also had a chance to demo Creative Law Enforcement Resources Inc AUFIRE's incredible wearable technology that delivers gunshot like pain to the officers and saw in real time the effect of physical pain on officer’s cognitive load. See video below for how the officer learned to tolerate the physical pain and was able to refocus in the middle the scenario. Do you use a simulator for training and want to see how much stress your scenarios are?creating and how officers are regulating their stress? Reach out today. Only 2 months left before we are closing the beta pricing! #simulatortraining #lawenforcementtraining #useofforcetraining #decisionmaking #mentalresilience #stressregulation

It is always a pleasure to talk to Brian Willis.?Here is our second conversation recorded for the Excellence in Training Academy. We talked about NeuroSmart and its uses in law enforcement training. Brian graciously thanks me for our heavy focus patrol officers (as opposed to SWAT units or military operators, who we also train). To be honest, it is a natural application for a technology that is designed to enhance decision making under stress. One of the biggest feeders of anxiety and its negative impact on decision making is ambiguity. Patrol officers literally never know if it will be a quiet night or that night that leaves them traumatized and prone to various health problems for the rest of their lives. Furthermore in every incident there is ambiguity around the level of threat that they need to navigate in a dynamic way.?A lot times they are trying to figure all of this out solo without a back-up or a team. So yeah... we think there is a huge impact NeuroSmart can have for patrol officers around the country to improve their resilience, wellbeing, performance and health. We are proud to serve those who selflessly serve our communities. https://lnkd.in/gz4qqieU Thank you Brian for having me and cheers to many more conversations! ? #lawenforcementtraining #mentalresilience #tacticalwellness #decisionmakingunderstress

Always learning, questioning & growing. Seeking to apply the ‘now what?’

Another great part of the Force Science conference is speaking to others in the community. In this case the device by NeuroSmart, Melis Yilmaz Balban, PhD was there and Dawna Bagherian allowed me to literally play around with it. I had already had several long conversations with Dr. Balban via zoom about the device and was looking to take one for several months and put it through all sorts of tests both in formal training with others and in the typical N of 1 type things I love to do with myself. Unlike my Instagram account, I reserve posting things on LinkedIn for when I think they might be of value or at least interest to the community. After having this device on for just a few seconds, I tried a few things I had practiced in “theater of the mind” and received instant feedback. In fact so much so that it set off three alarms for the rate at which my SNS immediately increased. Anyway, if you haven’t considered this device, please look to do so, I know several departments in the United States and Canada have already signed up for beta testing with it. I look forward to making it to Abbotsford in 2025 where I know they are also testing it, and I will certainly have a lot more insight into how I believe it can best be used to optimize our training and the performance of our people. I hope you find this of value. For those of you who are already familiar with the device please feel free to email or message me as I would love to chat more. Concepts of Threat vs Challenge states with sympathetic nervous system activation, as well what kind of dosage can one look to use as a standard for post incident breathing, for example, simply using the device to bring peoples attention to how their nervous system is actually responding and with a little bit of training how it can possibly respond more optimally. what about differences between men and women, or perhaps seeing how one poor night sleep or some cumulative stressors impact you personally. I’m gonna do all that stuff, and let’s be honest, I’m going to do ice baths, heat, exposure, put myself through realistic scenarios, and everything else in between!
